Iona Men Win Third Straight Dual, LIU Women Earn First Victory of Season

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—  The men’s and women’s swimming teams had their home opener on Friday night when they took on Iona in a dual meet.

The women’s team grabbed its first victory of the season 150-112 while the men fell to the Gaels 145.5-116.5.

A number of Sharks impressed during the meet.

Mariajose Lopez Lizarraga snagged the victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:38.01. She also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.61.

Femke Backx won the 200-yard freestyle by four seconds with a 1:57.50.

The Sharks swept the women’s 100-yard backstroke with Kia Moerk (59.88), Alexandra Ciorna (59.96) and Alycia Weber (1:00.07) finishing one, two, three.

Giannis Venetos came out victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 58.00. He also won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:10.20.

Anapaula Gomez Janeiro won the 200-yard butterfly with a 2:12.25.

Summer Wenger came out on top in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of. 25.60.

Allie Bashor was the winner of the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 58.05.

Ethan Law once again won in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.25.

Lara Wielkiewicz grabbed her first win of the year in the 200-yard IM with a 2:12.60.

Dani Chocano Fernández won the 200-yard IM in 1:56.77.

Rea Shehu was the winner in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:09.73. She was followed by Moerk and Ciorna.

Benny KarlssonGiannis VenetosEthan Law and Alejandro Pascual Del Cid were victorious in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:34.60.

The Sharks return to the pool on Nov. 11 when they host Wagner.

The Iona University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving team took to the road for the first time this season as they traveled to the Brooklyn Campus of LIU.
 
The Iona men continued their strong swimming winning eight individual and one relay of the 14 contested for a 145.5-116.5 win to raise their record on the season to 3-1. The Iona women took the first and last relay events, but then could only manage three other wins in the remaining 12 races to fall to 1-4 on the season, 150-112.
 
The Iona Men had two freshmen pick up their first career wins, as Nick Patino took the 50-yard Freestyle in a season best 21.66. Classmate Elijah Decasseres continued his strong personal charge with his third consecutive meet with a lifetime best performance, picking up a win in the 200-yard Freestyle at 1:46.39. Fellow freshmen Noah Giunta took the 200-yard Butterfly race at 1:57.07 and Kieran Egan touched first in the 200-Back at 1:54.85.
 
The men’s other wins came from Senior Michael Faughnan who won the 1000-Free, 100-Back and 500-Free with respective times of 9:45.70, 50.63 and 4:47.19. Faughnan also combined Egan, Liam Pyatt and Nate Wales to win the 400-Freestyle Relay at 3:09.25.
 
The Iona women had wins from Megan Josephs (100-Breast at 1:09.51); Brennyn Veit (200-Breast at 2:28.86) and Isabella Nicholson (100-Free at 53.99).
 
The team returns home on Saturday to face off against Providence College at the Hynes Pool with diving at 11:00am and Swimming at 1:00pm.
