WashU Rolls To Sweep Over SLU In Season-Opener

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 16 Washington University in St. Louis women’s swimming and diving team defeated Saint Louis University (SLU) in the opening meet of the 2023-24 season on Friday evening at Millstone Pool by a score of 129.50-113.50.

Swimming
In the first event of the day, the 200 medley relay, Elizabeth Chen, Riya Sahota, Eve Kearns and Sophia Gossum finished second with a time of 1:48.38. SLU first-place team edged the Bears by just .01, finishing in 1:48.37.

Sophomore Nicole Caruso was the top finisher for the Bears in the 1,000 freestyle, taking fourth in 11:08.25.

First-year Rachel Bello won the field in the 200 freestyle, taking first in 1:56.99. Isabella Barrientos took third with a time of 1:58.41.

The Bears swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle, led by first-year Peyton Watson with a time of 24.79. Andrea Leng and Izzie Gattone tied for second with a time of 24.99.

Rin Iimi won the 200 IM, racing to a time of 2:11.00. The Bears also finished third through sixth as Lili Sandor took third in 2:12.31, Kearns finished fourth in 2:13.82, Hannah Lee claimed fifth in 2:13.85 and Ali Roche finished sixth with a time of 2:14.13.

Watson, a first year, won the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.91, followed by Kearns in second in 59.10.

Iimi tied for first in the 100 freestyle, racing to a time of 54.20. Gossum took third with a time of 54.70 and Gatton finished fifth in 55.93.

Chen, a first year, won the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.54.

Roche was the top Bears’ finisher in the 500 freestyle, taking third in 5:17.92. Barrientos finished fourth in 5:19.67.

Lee, a first-year, won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.37 while Bello took third in 1:-7.85. Sandor finished fourth in 1:08.45 and Sahota took fifth in 1:08.71.

The Bears wrapped up the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Leng, Roche, Gossum and Bello raced to a time of 1:39.73, behind SLU’s top team that won in 1:39.23.

Diving
First-year Shanze Karimi won the 1-meter board, racking up 239.60 points. Noa Miller finished second with a score of 232.65 and Madi Okon took fifth with 205.60 points.

Okon was the top Bears’ finished on the 3-meter board taking second with 210.90 points. Rosie Finglass took third with a score of 205.50 and Miller finished fifth with 190.75 points.

The Bears return to action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. meet against Chicago.

St. Louis, Mo. – The No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis men’s swimming and diving team defeated Saint Louis University (SLU) to open the season on Friday evening at Millstone Pool. The Bears finished with 128.50 points to SLU’s 105.50 points.

Swimming
The Bears opened up the day with a win in the 200 medley relay as the team of Kyle WolfordJustin Rockaway, Alex McCormick and Kai Garren won in 1:33.85. WashU also finished third as the team of Andy ZhuNathan LinMason Rhode and Nico Gomez swam to a time of 1:37.13.

Orluke Borjigin took second in the 1,000 freestyle, racing to a time of 9:53.94. JP Vanderloo finished fourth with a time of 9:59.18.

Ethan Feng won the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:42.82. Reece Bends finished third with a time of 1:45.39 while Ryan Hillery took fourth with a time of 1:45.59. Pace Edwards finished fifth in 1:46.11.

Lin was the top Bears’ finisher in the 50 freestyle, taking second in 21.57. Garren finished tied for fifth with a time of 22.10.

McCormick led the field in the 200 IM, winning in 1:54.22, followed by Austin Bick in second with a time of 1:56.36. Marco Minai took third in 1:56.97.

The Bears swept the top five spots in the 100 butterfly, led by Wolford in first with a time of 50.91. Rhode took second in 51.87 with Matthew Walker in third with a time of 52.89. Zhu finished fourth in 53.10 and Tommy Moul took fifth in 53.29.

Feng won his second race of the day, the 100 freestyle, with a time of 47.49. Bends finished third with a time of 48.10 and Rockaway took fourth in 48.27. Bick rounded out the top five with a time of 48.41.

McCormick followed with his second win of the day, claiming the top spot in 51.18.

Hillery won the 500 freestyle, racing to a time of 4:47.36, followed by Minai in second in 4:49.08.

Lin won the 100 breaststroke, racing to a time of 58.98. Rockaway took fourth in 59.65.

The Bears rounded out the day with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Bick, Garren, Feng and Bends raced to a time of 1:26.54 while SLU’s winning team swam to a time of 1:26.24.

Diving
Elliot Polikowski took third place in the 1-meter with a score of 157.80.

The Bears host Chicago next Saturday at 1 p.m.

ST. LOUIS – Emily Leonard and Ben Mears won two events each for Saint Louis in the Billikens’ dual meet vs. Washington University Friday night.

WashU won the women’s meet 129.50-113.50 and the men’s meet 128.50-105.50.

Leonard led the women’s team with victories in the 500 free (5:08.48) and 1000 free (10:31.31). She also anchored the winning 200 free relay team (1:39.23) that also included Elena EscalanteCarly McKeon and Karis Reynaga.

Mears captured first place in 1-meter (251.80) and 3-meter (218.70) diving.

Also winning for the SLU women were Escalante in the 100 free (tie, 54.20), Elizabeth Voss in 3-meter diving (229.30), and the 200 medley relay team of Meghan EngKenna CashmanMaryBeth Clark and Escalante (1:48.37).

For the Billiken men, Mears was joined on the winner’s stand by Colton Mosley in the 50 free (21.54), Franklin Liu in the 1000 free (9:52.44), and the 200 free relay squad of Mosley, Ethan HoakLogan Townsend and Ethan Highley (1:26.24).

Up next for the Billikens is a triple dual meet vs. Bellarmine, Eastern Illinois and Valparaiso Saturday, Oct. 28, in Louisville, Ky.
