We caught up with NC State head coach Braden Holloway at the 2023 ASCA World Clinic in Dallas, Texas. We were curious about the origins of “Hottub Tuesday”, a speed challenge that originated last year which most recently saw redshirt freshman Quintin McCarty go 18.8 (watch time, wearing an old tech suit) in a 50 free. Holloway also gave us his thoughts on the ASCA Clinic, coaching at the 2023 World Champs, and the upcoming season for the wolf pack.

About Coleman Hodges
Coleman Hodges
Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …

Timed this with 1/4th speed on youtube a few times and I put him at 19.14. The hand timing was off by less than I would have thought! Insane speed there and quite a margin on some of the other top sprinters in the nation.
A little back issue…..way more than that. Should have asked him how it happened…. That’s the rest of the story they’re not telling you…….
Well, what happened?
believe it or not, he actually did an 18.8🙀 i was there thank u bye
Here comes another season of bold claims for practice swims.
seems like a quality coach and human being. respect
Braden peaked at 4th place. Undeniably deserves the new pool but the squad has peaked and it’s clear Braden is not flexible toward the demands of his athletes (ex: trying to turn Curtiss in a 100/200 freer) and not developing his breaststrokers at all
Did he peak at 4th place or did NC State peak at 4th place?
I’ve always sort of wondered if there’s a world, especially in modern sports/college, where schools hit their “peak” in swimming. Based on academic rep, general sporting rep/culture…IDK what else. Not that it’s impossible to overcome – I wouldn’t have expected Auburn to be the heartbeat of swimming for a decade, for example. But it just becomes really, really hard.
Maybe the new pool is what gets them over the hump?
If Holloway takes the job at Texas, I would bet he’d win titles.
He reached his peak, at NC State. Clearly took the program to new heights, but that’s not to say someone else wouldn’t have a higher peak.
well said, and wow, didn’t realize NC State actually has enough fans to downvote that
Seriously how many people are NC State fans? Seems to be an army of delusional Cal fans, Texas nutjobs, IU meatriders, and Stanford academic enthusiasts but never see NC State get love on this site
More NCSU trolls than there are for any of the other teams you mentioned.
Says the guy who never made the show.
The other teams in the top 5 are pretty good and have pretty good coaches (Durden, Bowman, Nesty, Looze, Reese). It’s not easy to finish top 5, that’s an accomplishment in itself.
Texas is going to hurt with all they’re losing so NCST will probably finish ahead of Texas this year.
They probably have the worst pool compared to the top teams, and they recruit well. He’s also lost a few great assts. He’s great and the program is great. They have a great class coming in this year which bodes well for the future.
Fans were applauding Minnesota for their streak of top 20 finishes yet followers want to beat up NCSU for their streak of top 5 finishes.
Braden is an outside the box thinker, genius and quality man!
maybe he’ll need to channel some of that “outside of the box” thinking to get NC State over the hump and finally finish better than 4th
Do you think he’s a better coach than Durden, Bowman, Reese, Nesty, or Looze?
Yes, No, Now he is, yes, and yes
Braden is a much better coach than Durden, slightly worse than Bowman, Eddie isn’t a fair comparison because he’s had one foot out the door. Braden clears military drill sergeant Nesty and breaststroke merchant Looze
Did he break up with you or something bro?
He’s a great coach and human!
