Luana Alonso made the most out of her Thursday night swim after she snuck into the B-final of the women’s 100-meter butterfly as the last seed thanks to a late scratch.
The 19-year-old SMU sophomore became the first Paraguayan woman under a minute in the 100 fly, clocking a 59.88 to win the B-final out of lane eight. She broke her own national record, a 1:00.13 from last year’s South American Youth Games. Alonso is now the fastest South American woman in the event so far this year.
The best part came when she caught a glimpse of the results and punctuated her performance with the celebration of the week.
All the emotions 🤍
After finishing 17th in prelims, Luana Alonso was later added in as the last seed of the B final after a scratch and ended up WINNING her heat from lane eight 🙌#TYRProSeries pic.twitter.com/l1rGNcP3xz

At 17 years old, Alonso competed at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. She placed 28th in the 100 fly with a time of 1:00.37. At last summer’s World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Alonso placed 20th in the 100 fly (1:01.25).
She joined the NCAA ranks during the 2021-22 season at Virginia Tech before transferring to SMU this past season. She helped the Mustangs capture an AAC title in the 200 free relay while also posting top-five times in program history in the 100 fly (52.08) and 200 fly (1:56.60).
Honestly I wasn’t even sure SMU actually had a swim team prior to this.

She makes that face after EVERY race… don’t let her fool you
Too much haterade in your diet
