Diogo Ribeiro Clocks 51.45 Portuguese Record In 100 Fly

2023 PORTUGAL OPEN

18-year-old Diogo Ribeiro already broke Portuguese National Records in the 50m free and 100m free while competing at the 2023 Portugal Open, but he kept the ball rolling into day 3 as well.

Racing the men’s 100m butterfly, Ribeiro ripped the fastest time of his career, posting a winning result of 51.45 to clear the field by over a second.

Ribeiro’s time erased the previous national standard of 51.61, a time he put on the books in the heats of the event at the 2022 European Championships. There in Rome Ribeiro ultimately placed 8th with a final time of 52.28.

Ribeiro’s splits for his 51.45 record here included 23.89/27.56 to get the job done, qualifying for the World Championships and Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the process. The former’s minimum time standard rests at 51.96 while the latter’s minimum qualification time sits at 51.93.

Ribeiro now ranks 4th in the world on the season, tying China’s Wang Changhao and Canada’s Ilya Kharun.

Of note, runner-up in the race, Gabriel Dias scored a time of 52.79 to qualify for the inaugural LEN U23 Championships.

A women’s national record also bit the dust, as Ana Rodrigues captured the 50m breast gold in a time of 30.96. That sliced .02 off of the NR of 30.98 she posted in the morning heats of the event.

Entering this meet, Rodrigues held the Portuguese standard in the 31.04 she clocked at the 2022 European Championships, meaning she delved into sub-31-second territory for the first time in her career at this competition. Her effort qualifies her for the World Championships.
