64-year old Diana Nyad is now getting extremely close to her final destination of Key West, Florida. With her current course pacing her to 112 miles, as of the last update at 8:30 AM Eastern Time, Nyad had under 10 miles left to complete her goal of swimming from Cuba to Florida. That means that as of now, she has officially broken through the century barrier.

An hour prior, a doctor’s checkup revealed some pretty severe swelling of the tongue and throat, and her team of doctors were concerned about her airways, but opted not to stop the swim. So onward the swim marches, with her support boats reporting that she is still strong at 51 strokes per minute: the same pace at which she used when she began the swim.

So close to the end, any minute could come a report of Nyad’s success, or a last-minute medical disaster. Unless something really major happens in between, expect our next report to be a report of arrival or extraction.

CNN has her at less than five miles to go and they’ve got some (rather grainy) live video footage.

She is an amazing lady, fingers crossed nothing stops her from completing the swim. I have the utmost admiration for what she has done, reading the updates on her site you really begun to understand all the obstacles and hurdles other than just the sheer distance and physical endurance required.
