HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University swimming and diving team took its two-day dual, 300.5-223.5, over the Duquesne Dukes Friday and Saturday at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Prior to Saturday’s portion of the event, the Herd honored Adriana Abruzzino, Lauren Henderson, Maria McGovern, Nicole Rueff, Or Tamir, Alexis Wilhoit and Joelle Williams for Senior Day.
Marshall put together a great performance during the event taking first in 19 of the events across the two days with record-breaking and top-10 performances in program history.
“Our team really rallied around our last home stand with our seniors at The Fitch and put together a fantastic showing,” Herd swimming and diving head coach Ian Walsh said. “Top to bottom we had some really well executed performances.”
“In total, there were two pool records broken (Eszter Laban – 1000 Free, McBride, Banton, Hart, Katayama – 400 Medley Relay), two All Time Top 10 performances (Eszter Laban & Federica Savoia – 2nd and 8th in 1000 Free), one NCAA Zone Qualifier (Lauren Henderson – 1m Diving) and Five NIC “A” Standards (Banton, Tamir, and West – 100 IM, McBride – 50 Back, Banton – 50 Breast, Laban – 1000 Free).”
“We are in a great place leading into the final three weeks and there is a lot of confidence being built amongst the team. I know these women will be ready come February for Missouri Valley Championships.”

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Duquesne swimming and diving fell to Marshall in a two-day meet Friday and Saturday, losing 300.5-223.5.
Friday
Duquesne finished in second- and third-place in the 400-yard medley to kick things off, with times of three minutes and 44.85 seconds and 3:50.11, respectively.
Orla Egan set a new Duquesne school-record in the 1,000 free with a time of 1:09.47, which was good for second-place in the event. She broke her previous school record of 10:11.41. Egan also won the 500 free, besting all other swimmers with a time of 4:54.59.
In the 200 free, Haley Scholer set a new personal-best with a time of 1:51.70 while taking home first-place in that event. Gaby Jenkins finished in second-place in the 50 free at 24.45.
In the 100 free, Molly Brennan (52.41) and Katie Simpson (52.87, SB) finished in second and third, respectively.
Claudia Rzeznik swam to a third-place finish in the 50 fly, completing the race in 26.52, which was the fastest time in the event by Duquesne this year. In the 50 back, Reagan Linkous (26.71), Hannah Morelli (27.32, SB) and Hayley Taylor (27.67) finished in third-, fourth- and fifth-place, respectively.
Sydney Severini (30.11) and Abby Mele (30.19) raced to a fourth- and fifth-place finish in the 50 breast, respectively, which were both season-bests for them. Severini’s time was the best by a Duquesne swimmer in the 50 breast this season.
In the 200 free relay, Duquesne had two quartets finish in the top-three. In the only diving event of the night, Amy Read placed second in the 1-meter with a total score of 271.35.
Saturday
To begin Saturday’s events, Duquesne finished in second and third in the 200 medley relay with times of 1:48.21 and 1:49.46, respectively.
Brennan followed that race up with a win in the 200 free, finishing in 1:54.81. In the 100 back, Scholer placed second with a time of 57.08.
Mele and Severini placed second and third in the 100 breast with times of 1:05.59 and 1:06.27, respectively. In the 200 fly, Rzeznik placed third with a time of 2:09.82.
Kayla Johnson won the 50 free by just 0.18th of a second, finishing in 24.14. She followed that up with a second-place finish in the 100 free at 53.58 seconds. Gaby Jenkins was right behind her in third-place.
Scholer won the 200 back with a time of 2:03.24. Linkous was hot on her trail, placing second with a time of 2:04.37.
In the 200 breast, Mele placed third with a time of 2:22.91.
Egan continued to impress in the 500 free, winning that event with a time of 5:05.18. In the 100 fly, Scholer (58.56) and Rzeznik (58.57) finished 0.01 second apart in second in third.
Emma Menzer and Severini finished in second- and third-place in the 200 IM with times of 2:10.12 and 2:11.14, respectively.
In the final swimming event, the 400 free relay, Duquesne’s teams finished in second, third and fourth with times of 3:34.57, 3:36.00 and 3:47.41, respectively.
On the diving board, Read won the 1m dive with a 293.78 overall score, which is a new season-best. In the 3m dives, it was a Duquesne sweep in the top-three. Sidney O’Donnell (291.15) finished first, Read (289.43) finished second and Ashley Felitsky (253.88) finished third.
NEXT UP
Duquesne doesn’t have to travel far for its next competition, as it will take part in the Western PA Invitational, hosted by Pitt, next Friday and Saturday. Pitt, Duquesne, Carnegie Mellon, Saint Francis and Cal U are the five schools competing.
