SwimMAC’s Freddy Klein (2024) Sends Verbal Commitment to Cal

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Freddy Klein, a high school junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, has announced his verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the 2024-25 school year.

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of California, Berkeley. I would like to thank my family, friends and SwimMAC coaches for all of your support. Thank you to Coach Durden, Coach Bowe and Coach Marsh for giving me this opportunity. Go Bears🐻!!”

Klein is a junior at Charlotte Country Day School. He does his year-round swimming at SwimMAC Carolina, where Cal’s associate head coach David Marsh was CEO and Director of Coaching for 10 years before going on to establish and coach at Team Elite.

Klein specializes in distance free, IM, and breaststroke. He was runner-up in the 500 free (4:36.86) and placed third in the 200 IM (1:55.32) at the North Carolina Independent Schools Division 1 state championship last February, a vast improvement from the previous year when he placed 5th in the 500 free (4:55.94) and 9th in the 200 free (1:52.06). He had a big meet one month later at Cary Sectionals where he won the mile and came in fifth in the 1000 free. He clocked PBs in the 200/500/1000/1650 free and 400 IM at the meet.

This past summer, he had a strong long course season with PBs in the 200/400/800/1500 free, 200 breast, and 200/400 IM. At Cary Sectionals, he clocked lifetime bests in the 200/400/800 free, 200 breast, and 200/400 IM, finishing no lower than 16th in all his events. At Speedo Junior Nationals, he improved his 400 free and 400 IM times and added a PB in the 1500, coming in 6th in the 1500 (15:42.62) and 19th in the 400 IM (4:27.62).

Best SCY times:

  • 1650 free – 15:27.55
  • 1000 free – 9:15.66
  • 500 free – 4:35.84
  • 400 IM – 4:00.16
  • 200 IM – 1:54.79
  • 200 breast – 2:06.65

Klein will join the Golden Bears’ class of 2028, already arguably the best in the cohort, with verbal commits #5 Lucca Battaglini,#7 Carter Lancaster, “Honorable Mention” Nick Mahabir, “Honorable Mention” Thackston McMullan, “Best of the Rest” August Vetsch, Matthew Elliott, and Pieter Coetze.

Do the coaches know? Those times don’t scream Cal men’s team.

Cal seems to find these diamonds in their recruiting and development.

Keep in mind these times are not only from pre-junior year, he’s ascending like a madman. His 2-IM nearly matched his 2-Free from a year ago, and by the looks of it, he has taken another massive leap over the summer. 15:42 in the mile & 4:27 in the 4-IM LCM translate to ballpark ~15:15 and ~3:50 in SCY. That’s up there with the Gunner Bentz and Curtis Ogren’s of the world going into their junior years, and I cant imagine there are more than a handful of kids who have that in their toolkit

After how many people downvoted my prophetic vision on Cal’s 2024 class, I think I’ll keep rubbing this one in. Thank you for your input though.
