MIT’s Edenna Chen Closes in on Kustritz’s NCAA DIII Record in 100 BR Prelims

2022 NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS

WOMEN’S 100 BREAST

Top 8 finishers:

  1. Edenna Chen (MIT): 1:00.29
  2. Jennah Fadely (KEN): 1:01.50
  3. Jordyn Wentzel (SCU): 1:01.66
  4. Edie Bates (EMORY): 1:02.24
  5. Amanda Wager (WILL): 1:02.25
  6. Kinsey Brooks (UWM): 1:02.59
  7. Alexandra Gill (PP): 1:02.71
  8. CC Crane (DEN): 1:02.98

In prelims of the women’s 100 breast in Indianapolis this morning, MIT junior Edenna Chen swam a new personal best to take the top seed for tonight’s final. Chen entered the meet with a personal best of 1:00.43, which she swam at the NEWMAC Championships last month. Her time this morning was 1:00.29, marking a personal best by 0.14 seconds.

With the performance, Chen remains the #2 performer all-time among NCAA DIII swimmers. She sits behind only KT Kustritz, the Denison superstar who holds the DIII Record at 59.77 from the 2018 NCAAs. Chen has now put herself within 0.52 seconds of the DIII record, and she has another chance to lower her mark again tonight, plus her senior season next year.

Here is a split comparison between KT Kustritz‘s record, Chen’s swim this morning, and her swim last month:

Split Edenna Chen – 2022 DIII NCAAs (Prelims) Edenna Chen – 2022 NEWMAC Championships KT Kustritz – 2018 DIII NCAAs (DIII Record)
1st 50 28.18 28.42 28.13
2nd 50 32.11 32.01 31.64
FINAL TIME 1:00.29 1:00.43 59.77

As you can see from the splits, the biggest difference is that Kustritz was faster on the back half of the race. It appears as though Chen has a very good shot at the record, given how well she’s swum on MIT’s relays so far. She split 27.29 on the 200 medley relay early in the meet, before clocking a blistering 58.96 on the 400 medley relay last night.
