MUNCIE, Ind. – – The Ball State men’s swimming and diving team celebrated senior day with a dominating effort in the pool, scoring 10 events wins on its way to a 153-95 victory over Valparaiso Saturday afternoon at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
“Today was a great meet for the Cardinals,” head coach J. Agnew said. “We were a little tired in practice this week, but they really let the energy take over for senior day and the last home meet of the season at Lewellen. They rallied and swam well, which was exciting for us coaches to see. We showed a little fire today, that’s for sure.”
The Cardinals (3-1; 1-1 Mid-American Conference) honored its five-member senior class by turning in the fastest times in all 14 events, including exhibitions in the final four races.
Prior to the start of competition, Ball State recognized senior swimmers Philip Choroser, Duncan McLarty, Ryan Short, and Bennet Witteveen, as well as senior diver Hunter Ongay, for their contributions to the program.
“These seniors came in with me and they have embraced what we have been trying to do as a program here,” Agnew said. “They have meant so much to the culture of this team. They know our expectations are high, and they set that tone as freshmen and put us on a good trajectory. We’re really excited with the way we are moving, and it’s because of these seniors.”
Leading the way with a pair of individual event victories was junior Owen Chaye who swept the sprint freestyle events with times of 21.31 in the 50 and 46.81 in the 100.
The Cardinals would also pick up the individual win in the longest event of the day, as freshman Max Kruglov touch the wall in 10:07.62 to just edge out junior teammate Zachary Moody who clocked in at 10:08.19.
Ball State’s swimmers would go on to sweep the backstroke events, with sophomore Joey Garberick taking the 100 (51.99) and sophomore Sam Jennings winning the 200 (1:58.77).
The Cardinals also swept the breaststroke events thanks for freshman Michael Burns in the 100 (1:00.37) and junior Noah Berryman in the 200 (2:14.60).
Rounding out Ball State’s individual event winners were junior Aiden Maurer in the 200 freestyle (1:56.30) and freshman Eli Germain in the 200 butterfly (1:56.30).
The Cardinals also opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay in which Garberick, Burns, junior Bryce Handshoe and McLarty clocked in at 1:35.00.
In the diving well, both the men and women were in action for a non-scored dual versus UIndy. Freshman Ashleigh Provan continued her strong year, taking top honors on both the 1M (252.00) and 3M (275.10) boards.
On the men’s diving side, sophomore Isaac Hunter was the only Ball State student-athlete in competition, taking second on 3M (263.33) and third on 1M (227.03).
Select members of the Ball State men’s swimming & diving program will travel to the Ohio State Winter Invitational (Feb. 11-13), while the entire squad will continue to prepare for the 2022 Mid-American Conference Championships which will be held March 2-5 at Southern Illinois.
