The eighth-ranked IU men and 15th-ranked IU women easily defeated Purdue in dual meets on Jan. 22nd, at IU. The Indiana men beat the Purdue men for the 12th consecutive time, while the IU women defeated the Purdue women for the 11th consecutive time. The IU men won every men’s swimming event at the meet.
IU freshman Rafael Miroslaw won three individual events for the Hoosiers, sweeping the sprint free events. In the 200 free, he finished in 1:36.10. The German was a little over three seconds off of his best time, set at the Ohio State Invite in November (1:33.00). Miroslaw was 1:33.39 in a dual meet with Louisville on Jan. 14th. IU went 1-2-3 in the 200.
Miroslaw also won the 50 free with a time of 20.13, his best time this season is a 19.54 (again at the Ohio State Invite). He was slightly faster at IU’s last dual meet with Louisville, where he went 20.00. His 20.13 is Miroslaw’s second fastest dual meet time this season.
His last individual win came in the 100 free, finishing in at 43.45, a little over a second off of his best time of 42.41, set at the Ohio State Invite. This was also his second fastest time in a dual meet this season, with his fastest coming again against Louisville, where he went 43.10.
Senior Gabriel Fantoni won two individual events for IU, winning the 100 and 200 backstrokes. He finished in 47.00 in the 100, and 1:46.55 in the 200. He also led off IU’s winning 200 medley relay, splitting a 21.41 in the back. Fantoni represented Brazil at Short Course Worlds in December.
The Hoosier women has three event wins from Mackenzie Looze, Kacey McKenna, and Anna Peplowski. Looze won the 200 IM in 2:01.45, and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays.
McKenna swept the backstroke events and led off the winning 200 medley relay. The freshman swam a best time in the 200 back, finishing in 2:00.89 (her previous time was 2:01.04, set at the Ohio State Invite).
Peplowski, another freshman, won individual races in the 100 and 500 frees. In the 100 she finished in 50.22, off of her best time of 48.77. In the 500 she swam a 4:54.25, the first time she has swam the event this season. Her last 500 was at the Illinois Senior Championships, where she went a 4:52.84.
Purdue freshman Hannah Hill gave the Boilermakers their only swimming win of the meet in the 50 free. Hill swam a 23.30, 0.28 off of her season best time of 23.02.
IU coach Ray Looze dedicated the wins to his seniors, saying “in athletics today, to start and finish at the same institution, to me, is hugely important, and I want to recognize it and celebrate it.”
Indiana’s next meet is vs. Evansville at home on Jan. 28th. The Purdue women host Illinois on Jan. 28th while the Purdue men travel to Minnesota to swim against Minnesota and Northwestern for the Big Ten Triple Duals.
