Newark, Del. – James Madison swimming & diving defeated Colonial Athletic Association foe Delaware 177-123, with 11 first place finishes, highlighted by the sweep of the 100-yard backstroke.
“First I want to thank Delaware’s program and administration for hosting us,” said head coach Dane Pedersen. “The weather caused a lot of adjustments and Delaware catered to our travel. The girls had really good energy today. It was our first time being on the road this season and the girls responded well. We still have plenty to work on but we are progressing well toward our goal of peaking at the CAA Championships.”
The Dukes picked up 11 first place finishes, highlighted by the sweep of the 100-yard backstroke.
The relay team of Cameron Gring, Mackenzie Lawson, Morgan Whaley and Jordyn Schnell opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:53.34. Junior Sidney Whitfield held her own in the distance freestyle events claiming first in the 1000 free (10:32.03) and second in the 500 free (5:08.60). Senior Bailey Butler placed second in the 1000 free event with a time of 10:40.45 and fourth in the 500 free clocking 5:12.60.
Jill Santiago placed second in the 200 free clocking a time of 1:54.65, followed by fellow Duke Karen Siddoway in third with a time of 1:58.48. Santiago picked up a third place finish in the 500 free (5:08.64) as well.
Freshman Cameron Gring led the way for JMU in the 100 backstroke placing first with a time of 57.04, followed by Paige Assaid in second (57.55) and Alaina Park in third (58.31). Gring tabbed two more first-place finishes, the 200 backstroke event clocking a time of 2:03.64 and 200 individual medley at 2:07.38. Assaid grabbed a first-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 52.67. Schnell placed third and Siddoway in fourth.
Whaley picked up a second place finished in the 200 butterfly clocking a time of 2:04.58. Sarah Gaudet placed fifth in the event. Schnell picked up her first individual first-place finish as a Duke in the 50 free with a time of 24.03. Madison Cottrell placed third in the 50 free clocking a time of 24.58 followed by Sydni Diehl in fourth (24.97).
Senior Emily Gross led the way on the boards for JMU tabbing two first-place finishes and NCAA Zone qualifying scores. On the 3-meter Gross scored 293.25, followed by Sarah Stim in second with NCAA Zone qualifying score of 281.70. Lexi Lehman placed fourth, Lindsey Hammar tabbed fifth and Felicity Ryan finished in sixth. On the 3-meter Gross recorded 275.35, with Stim next in second place with 262.45and Hammar in fourth scoring 256.50.
James Madison closed out their victory with a first place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.70 from the team of Schnell, Park, Cottrell and Assaid.

The James Madison diver will host the Duke Dog Diving Invite on Saturday, Feb. 27 at noon. The swimmer will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to compete in the UNC Last Chance Meet on Sunday, Feb. 28.
