NEWARK, N.J. — In the final home meet of the 2019-20 season, the NJIT men’s swimming and diving team defeated the visiting Howard Bison Sunday afternoon at the Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT won ten of the 16 events in the meet en route to victory against Howard. Four Highlanders – Cole Becker, Joshua Franco, Nicholas Lyons, and Mattheau Bonner – each took two individual events while Lyons, Bonner, Franco and Edward Madrigal won the 200 Medley Relay (1:34:44) and Jake Nelms (500 Free – 4:52.23) claimed the other individual win for NJIT.

“The team is in a good mindset going into our preparation for the CCSA Championships,” head coach Ron Farina said after the win. “We are looking forward to getting back to work and getting some good racing in as we prepare for CCSAs in Knoxville in a couple weeks.”
The meet was also the final home one for NJIT’s five seniors – Becker, Brendan Kavanagh, Edward Parks, Tyler Pollock, and Kevin Roberton. The quintet were honored by the Highlander coaching staff and Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics Lenny Kaplan before the start of the meet.

NJIT will head to Tennessee in two weeks to compete in the CCSA Championships from February 19-22.

NEWARK, N.J. (February 2, 2020) – Howard University men’s swimming & diving squad fell to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), 117-171, despite an incredible performance from freshman standout Miles Simon (Atlanta).
Sunday (Feb. 2), the Atlanta native won three individual races while etching himself into the school’s record book.
Simon took home gold in the men’s 100 Back (51.80), 200 Back (1:55.38) and 200 IM (1:58.24). In those three events, he posted the fifth, second and seventh best marks in program history, respectively.
Fellow classmate Mark-Anthony Beckles (Chaguanas, Trinidad & Tobago) earned first place in the men’s 50 Free (21.44) while registering the ninth-fastest 100 Free time (46.69) in school history.
Newcomer Luke-Kennedy Thompson (Nassau, Bahamas) won the men’s 1000 Free with the program’s fourth-best mark (10:02.48).
Beckles, alongside senior Maalik Nixon (Peachtree City, Ga.), junior Kegan Ford (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) and freshman Arion Solomon (Fairburn, Ga.) placed first in the men’s 200 Free, clocking in at 1:25.92.
On the board, junior Jalen Watson (Miami) gradually continues to shine, producing the fourth-best 1-meter dive score in school history (204.75).
On Feb. 19-22, the Bison travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the 2020 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships.
