PHILADELPHIA – Men’s swimming & diving started the new decade with a win, defeating Monmouth on Wednesday 199-86. Senior Marcus Forsgren and sophomore Zachary Wolbert combined for six of La Salle’s 10 individual wins on the day.
MEET NOTES
- Both Forsgren and Wolbert picked up three wins each. The Swede claimed top times in the 50 Free (21.57), 100 Free (47.02) and 100 Breast (57.64). Wolbert outpaced the field in the 100 Fly (50.36), 200 Fly (1:50.77) and 200 IM (1:52.73)—the last of which was an exhibition swim.
- Junior Daniel Johnson also had an afternoon to note with a pair of wins, claiming the 200 Free (1:42.88) and 500 Free (4:43.13).
- Dyson’s Day: freshman Cole Dyson recorded a few good results, headlined by a win in the 1000 Free (9:43.51). The rookie also touched second in the 500 Free and third in the 200 Free.
- Plenty of other freshmen came to swim against the Hawks. Trenton Burr and Alex Kuriawa flip-flopped results in the backstroke: Burr took second in the 100 meter and Kuriawa third, while Kuriawa finished second in the 200 meter and Burr third. Fellow rookies Sebastian Aguirre raced to second in the 200 Fly and Matthew Brajuka finished third in the 500 Free.
- The other first-place result of the day came from senior Christoff Ras in the 200 Breast (2:05.12). Ras also landed second in the 100 Breast and 200 IM.
- The men went one-two in the 400 Medley Relay to begin the meet and had the top time in the 200 Free Relay as well (exhibition swim).

- Head coach Jamie Platt spoke after the victory: “It was great to be back competing. It was even better to see the hard work paying off. We have set our expectations high and I am excited to see these women and men get after it.”
UP NEXT
- The Explorers hit the road for away meets at Fordham on Saturday and Loyola (Md.) on Monday. They then return home for Senior Day vs. Seton Hall on the 25th.
PHILADELPHIA – It was a good start to the second semester for women’s swimming & diving, defeating Monmouth 173-117 in the penultimate home meet of the season. The Explorers combined for eight individual victories with freshman Toni Rafferty accounting for three wins and sophomore Anne Moser claiming two top finishes.
MEET NOTES
- Debut statement: Rafferty had only recent arrived from Makhanda, South Africa, but acclimated quickly on Wednesday afternoon. She took the top spot in the 50 Free (24.45) by nearly a second, the 100 Free (52.77) by 1.44 seconds and the 100 Fly (58.38) by 1.54 seconds.
- Moser continued her strong year with victories in the 500 and 1000 Free. She clocked 5:08.12 in the former, winning by almost 15 seconds and 10.36.94 in the latter with a win margin of over 31 seconds. She also finished second in the 200 Free.
- Senior surge: it was a good day for the most experienced Explorers. Emily Wolbert touched first in the 200 Fly (2:10.07) and second in the 100 Fly and 500 Free, classmate Carrie Horan picked up second-place finishes in the 100 Breast and 200 Breast, and Emma Capro swam to third in the 1000 Free.
- On the flip side, the freshman class continued to impress. Brynn Peterson beat all competition in the 200 Free with a time of 1:57.54 and a second-place finish in the 100 Free. Nina Kolodgie raced to second in the 1000 Free and third in the 500 Free. Lauren Fenn claimed second in the 100 Back.
- The women’s team also had the top times in the 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay.

PHILADELPHIA – The Monmouth University swimming teams opened their spring semester schedules on Wednesday afternoon with a dual meet against La Salle at Kirk Pool. The Explorers defeated Monmouth’s men’s team, while the women also fell to La Salle.
Tahlia Botha (Cape Town, South Africa / Reddam House Durbanville / Kenridge Primary) won three individual races, the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM. Camryn McHugh (Sicklerville, NJ / Gloucester Catholic) and Callan Smith (Hillarys, Australia / St. Mark’s Anglican) each added a pair of individual victories.
The men fell 199-86 and dropped to 6-2 on the year, while the women’s team moved to 5-4 after a 173-117 setback.

“The first meet of the spring semester is always challenging after not competing since early December. It can be a difficult transition back to racing after the heavy workload on our winter training trip. The team responded well throughout the meet showing great energy and spirit. We will need to focus on the details as we build toward the MAAC Championships.”

– Sophomore Callan Smith won the 100 back (52.16) and 200 back (1:56.03), giving him 14 first-place finishes in 2019 and 45 for his career.
– Junior Trevor Askew came in first place in the 200 IM (1:58.81) to win his 11th race of the year. Askew has 17 career individual victories.
– Monmouth’s men won the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:28.54 as Blake Reynolds, Valance Washington, Kevin Del Giorno and Dylan Barkhuizen teamed up for the victory.
– For the women’s team, Tahlia Botha contributed three individual wins, placing first in the 100 breast (1:08.85), 200 breast (2:29.25) and 200 IM (2:17.99). Botha has won 18 races so far in her freshman season.
– Sophomore Camryn McHugh won the 100 back (58.79) and 200 back (2:07.74) to increase her season total to 12 victories in 2019 and 36 for her career.
– Bradie Keelen, Mary Emich, Muriel Maloney and Emma Lagattolla combined to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, clocking in at 1:44.39.
UP NEXT
Monmouth will return home to Steadman Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. Both teams will compete against Saint Peter’s, with the women swimming in a tri-meet against Long Island University.
