Quotes
Men’s Swimming Head Coach Jay Holmes
On the team’s double-dual victory…
“This was a good day of racing for us. Historically this is a hard time of the year to get a team really invested in a meet. This was the best meet our team has had for this time of the year that I can remember. We had a real good effort level all day.”

On standout performances…
“[Shaine] Casas again did his usual, but another swimmer we were happy with was [Mark] Schnippenkoetter, pushing Shaine to that 200 Free win. Both of them were 1:38’s. I don’t know if Shaine would have gone 1:38 if Mark hadn’t been there on his shoulder the whole time. Adam Koster and Hudson Smith also had real good efforts. Adam’s two wins were a bit different in that the 100 Free was just executed real well, unlike the 100 Fly that was just a tough swim. Hudson Smith’s 1:50 200 IM that he did after his 500 Free win was also just done exceptionally.”

On switch-ups in the lineup…
“We tried several things with our lineup today. Specifically we put most of our guys in events that were fairly close together, asking them to get it done without their usual amount of rest. One of those was Jace Brown in the 200 Free and 200 Fly. That’s a hard double in the dual meet order. His win with a 1:49 in the 200 Fly was another just tough swim.”

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The New Mexico State swimming and diving team picked up its second-straight win, earning 582.2 points to finish ahead of UIW (545.5) and D-III Trinity University (552.9).  The Aggies picked up eight first-place finishes, nine second-place finishes and six third-place finishes.

“We had a really impressive day in the pool,” said associate head coach Rachel Judge. “Katherine Harston won all three of her events, despite the 1000 Free, 200 Fly and 500 Free being one of the toughest triples at a dual meet. Our sprinters were impressive, having two girls go 23-mid at an in-season meet was awesome to see. Freshman Skylar Welle won the 100 and 200 Breast with her fastest dual-meet swims of the year.”

NM State started strong, with the 200 Medley Relay squad of Anabel IvanovAshley ReynoldsReagan Nentwich and Neza Kocijan posting the fastest in-season relay splits of the year to finish first at 1:44.97. The B relay also posted a solid showing, finishing second with a time of 1:46.73.

Then, Katherine Harston started off a dominant triple with a win in the 1000 Free (10:46.91). Harston also won the other two events she swam in, the 200 Fly (2:09.34) and 500 Free (5:13.23).

Freshman Skylar Welle also had an excellent day in the pool. In the 100 Breast, she won with a time of 1:05.94, barely out-touching teammate Ashley Reynolds (1.05.96). She followed that up with a win in the 200 Breast (2:24.00), a race that saw the top-four spots go to Aggie swimmers.

NM State then went one-two in the 50 Free with freshman Aimee Burton (23.76) finishing just ahead of Airam Oliva-Aun (23.76) before the Aggies claimed the top-three spots in the 100 Free, led by Oliva-Aun (52.00).

The New Mexico State swimmers wrapped up the day with the fastest time in the 200 Free (1:34.89).

On the diving side, Italia Aranzabal continued her strong start to her freshman campaign, capturing both the 3m and the 1m. She finished the 3m with a score of 267.00 and her 275.90 in the 1m qualified her for the NCAA Diving Zones at the end of the season.

New Mexico State now gets a few weeks off before hosting CSU Pueblo on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11:30 a.m.
