The nation of Italy matches leader Russia in terms of overall medals through day 3 of the 2019 European Short Course Championships, but the latter nation still has a stranglehold on the top number of golds.
Italy’s Margherita Panziera took the women’s 200m backstroke tonight in a new national record of 2:01.45 to give her nation another tally in that column and maintain its runner-up status in the medal table.
Her teammate Ilaria Bianchi helped the cause with a silver in the 200m fly, establishing a new national record for her part in a time of 2:04.20 behind winner Katinka Hosszsu of Hungary.
Hosszu doubled up on that 2fly gold with another top prize in the 100m IM. Her time of 57.36 kept Russia’s Mariia Kameneva at bay, although Kameneva did produce a national record swim of 57.59 en route to silver.
Hosszu’s medal factory tonight helped moved her nation of Hungary up from 6th in the medal standings after yesterday’s action to 3rd place tonight.
Going back to Italy, the nation wrapped up its session with a big-time win in the 1500m freestyle by Olympic champion Gregorio Paltrinieri. The man produced a solid swim of 14:17.14 to get a hand on the wall ahead of Norway’s Henrik Christiansen. Christiansen collected silver in 14:18.15, the nation’s 2nd of the night.
Earlier in the men’s 200m IM, Tomoe Hvas clocked a time of 1:51.74 to set a new Norwegian standard and stand on the podium behind winner Andreas Vazaios of Greece. Vazaios scorched a new European Record time of 1:50.85 to get a gold for Greece tonight.
But, Russia was still at it, with Vlad Morozov taking the men’s 50m free over Frenchman Florent Manaudou 20.40 to 20.66. Another Hungarian, Maksim Lobanovskij, came out with some hardware, taking 3rd in that big boy race with a new national record of 20.76.
Lobanovskij now represents Hungary’s first-ever medal in the men’s’ 50m free event at any international championships.
