Yale Men Shock with School-Record 200 Free Relay at OSU Invite Night 1

Yale pulled an upset win in the men’s 200 free relay, clocking a school-record time of 1:17.96. Their old record was a 1:18.67 from 2018, and this time around they were led by Henry Gaissert‘s 19.26 second split and freshman Joseph Page‘s 19.33 anchor leg. Philippe Marcoux was 19.83 leading off, and Michael Blank added a 19.54 third leg. Painstakingly, the relay was a tenth off of the NCAA ‘B’ cut, but it was enough to take down power conference schools like Ohio State (1:18.99), Kentucky (1:19.28), and Notre Dame (1:20.42). OSU was led by Cameron Craig‘s 19.07 second leg.

That was one of two swims for Craig tonight. He opted out of individual swims, but was back to split a 46.21 as OSU won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:10.51. Andrew Loy was 42.94 anchoring the Buckeyes.

In the individual 50 free, although Kentucky’s Peter Wetzlar won the A-final in 19.73, it was Gaissert with the quickest time of the night. The Yale senior posted a 19.67 to win the B-final.

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt and Ohio State’s Kathrin Demler had the swims of the night on the women’s side. In the 200 IM, Seidt and Demler went head-to-head, with Seidt coming out on top (1:55.62) ahead of the Buckeye (1:56.45). Kentucky’s Bailey Bonnett was third (1:57.34), just ahead of Notre Dame freshman Coleen Gillilan (1:57.87). In the 500 free, though, Demler rocked a 4:37.22 for the victory, with Kentucky’s Ali Galyer also getting under 4:40 with a 4:39.56.

The Kentucky women went on to dominate the 400 medley relay, clocking the only sub-3:35 performance of the night. Caitlin Brooks led off in a 51.62, her first time under 52.0 and a time that is well ahead of the 52.46 it took to make NCAAs last year in this race. Bailey Bonnett was 59.62 breast, followed by Seidt’s 51.23 fly leg and Galyer’s 49.20 anchor leg. The quartet combined for a 3:31.67, one-hundredth off of the NCAA ‘A’ cut.

Notre Dame charged to a 1-2-3 finish in the men’s 500 free, fronted by Zach Yeadon. The junior clocked a 4:14.31 to get less than two seconds away from his lifetime best, and he was followed by teammates Jack Hoagland (4:17.56) and Sadler McKeen (4:18.03).

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS/NOTABLE SWIMS

• Kentucky’s Glen Brown hit the wall first in the 200 IM at 1:45.07, taking down Ohio State’s Paul Delakis (1:45.65).
• The OSU women had the only sub-1:30 showing in the 200 free relay as they posted a 1:29.90, anchored in 22.10 by Amy Fulmer. UCLA (1:30.40) and Notre Dame (1:30.85) were second and third, with Claire Grover hitting a 22.30 leading off the Bruins.
• Grover, in the individual women’s 50 free, took the win with a quicker time than her lead-off: 22.13.
