The 2019 World Para Swimming World Championships began on a high note Monday in London as five world records were set on the first night of competition.
China’s Yuyan Jiang set the first world mark of the meet, going 5:13.32 to take gold in the women’s S6 400 free. Taking silver was Yelyzaveta Mereshko, of the Ukraine, in 5:17.49, Great Britain’s Ellie Simmonds was third in 5:21.78.
Reece Dunn led a Great Britain podium sweep in the men’s S14 200 free. He set the next world record of, going 1:52.96, besting his prior mark of 1:53.57. Teammate Thomas Hamer was second in 1:55.19 and Jordan Catchpole third in 1:56.23.
Italian veteran Simone Barlaam broke a five-year-old world record in the men’s S9 100 free, winning in 54.10 (previous record 54.18). Russian swimmers went 2-3-4 behind Barlaam. Denis Tarasov was second in 56.34, Bogdan Mozgovoi third in 56.71 and Alexander Skaliukh third in 56.80.
Becca Meyers scored the United States’ first win of the night, taking the women’s S13 400 free in a new world record. She took tqo seconds off her own previous record, going 4:22.34 Just behind her for silver was the Ukraine’s Anna Stetsenko in 4:23.75. Rounding out the podium was Carlotta Gilli, of Italy, in 4:29.17.
Night one’s final world record came in the men’s SB5 100 breast. Andrew Granichka shaved over a second of the previous world record (1:28.57) to win in 1:27.15. China’s Junsheng Li took second place in 1:28.80, a new Asian record. Spain’s Antoni Ponce Beltran, the previous world record holder, notched a bronze in 1:29.45.

- Muhammad Nur Syaiful Zulkaflty, of Malaysia, hit a new Asian record in prelims of the men’s S5 50 free at 33.20.
- Rowan Crothers (Australia) went a new Oceania record in prelim’s of the men’s S10 50 free, going 23.70.
- Dmitrii Cherniaev, of Russia, won the men’s SB4 100 breast in a new European record – 1:36.20
- Brazilian veteran Daniel Dias hit a new Americas record to win the men’s S5 50 free in 31.83.
