Abby Arens, Eli Fouts Impress In 100 Breast At Day 2 NCSA Prelims

The first preliminary session of the 2018 NCSA Juniors went off this morning in Orlando, with the men and women contesting four events each along with some early relay heats. The women swam the 200 back, 100 free, 100 breast and 200 fly, while the men had the same events except the 100 free, swimming the 500 today instead.

Among the highlights was 16-year-old Abby Arens from the Marlins of Raleigh registering a new personal best of 1:00.00 in the 100 breaststroke, jumping her from 22nd to 12th on the all-time 15-16 rankings. She heads into finals with the top seed, while Claire Grover (1:00.86) of Scottsdale and Kylie Powers (1:00.95) of Swim Houston sit 2nd and 3rd.

In the men’s event Eli Fouts of Rockville Montgomery put up a best time of his own in 53.42, grabbing the top seed for finals. Number one coming in Charlie Scheinfeld of New Trier was 2nd in 53.91, and Casey Storch of Machine Aquatics moved up a few spots to take 3rd in 54.14.

Caitlin Brooks of the Gator Swim Club defended her top seed in the women’s 200 back, touching just over a tenth off her best time in 1:54.17. 15-year-old Isabelle Stadden also went a best to take 2nd in 1:54.60, and last night’s 1000 free winner Madison Homovich sits 3rd in 1:55.81. Phoebe Bacon of Nation’s Capital, the #2 seed coming in, is 4th in 1:55.98.

Spencer Walker of the Academy Bullets leads the men’s event in 1:44.08, followed by Jack Dahlgren (1:44.66) of the Aquajets and Peter Larson (1:45.09) of Edina. Top seed coming in Jack Dolan of Rockwood qualified for tonight 5th in 1:45.96.

Homovich made a second A-final for the day in the 200 fly, taking 8th in 1:58.66, with Grace Shelbe of Nova leading the charge in 1:56.82. Zach Brown from the Marlins of Raleigh was tops in the men’s event by over a second in 1:45.53.

The women’s 100 free saw six go sub-50 this morning, led by Grace Countie, also of the Marlins of Raleigh, in 49.55. Top two seeds coming in Katelyn Mack (Nation’s Capital) and Kaitlyn Schorr (Southwest Stars) snuck into the A-final in 7th and 8th.

1000 winner on the men’s side Hayden Curley of Highlander topped the 500 prelims in 4:23.75, followed by Julian Hill (4:23.81) and Andrew Matejka (4:25.06), who jumped 23 spots from his seed to take 3rd.
