Chinese Olympic Medalist Fu Yuanhui Stars in PETA Ad

Chinese swimmer Fu Yuanhui, who went viral in Rio after her shocked reaction to her bronze medal in the 100 backstroke, has become a spokesperson for the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Fu appeared in a recent PETA Asia ad wearing a shirt that says ‘Give Orcas Their Freedom – Reject Aquariums.’

“Confining orcas to aquarium tanks is like keeping a swimmer like me in a kids’ pool,” Fu says in the ad. “PETA Asia and I encourage everyone to let orcas and other animals swim free in the ocean, where they belong.”

Fu is the latest of another of aquatic athletes who have teamed up with PETA: a list that includes 7-time Olympic medalist Amanda Beard and U.S. water polo captain and legend Tony Azevedo.

The 2017 Chinese National Championships and World Championship Trials begin on Monday.
