On the last day of the 2016 TYR Invitational, we finally got a chance to see 2016 Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky race his marquee 1650 free. As expected, he blew the field away, posting a 14:48.94 to win by almost forty seconds and just miss the NCAA ‘A’ cut by four seconds. His time positions him at the #3 time in the country this year, while he smashed his own Northwestern pool record by more than six seconds.

Meanwhile, Wildcat freshman standout Valerie Gruest Slowing continued her siege on the distance free events with a win in the women’s mile. Her time of 16:01.28 topped 2016 NCAA scorer Genevieve Miller of Air Force by more than ten seconds– Miller touched 2nd in 16:13.14. Moreover, Gruest Slowing chopped big time off of Lauren Abruzzo‘s meet and program record of 16:10.40. While Wilimovsky might be graduating soon, the Wildcats have reloaded with a new distance starlet in Gruest Slowing, who currently holds the #3 time in the country this year.

The Northwestern women helped themselves to three more individual wins and a 400 free relay victory to cap off their meet. Senior Annika Winsnes sprinted to a win in the 100 free (49.92) before sophomore Peyton Greenberg broke her own personal record for a win in the 200 breast (2:12.58). In the 200 fly, Ellen Stello (1:59.07) snuck by Gruest Slowing in a great battle, with the freshman touching 2nd in 1:59.27. Winsnes went on to lead-off the NU 400 free relay in 49.57, as they finished in 3:20.49 and claimed the team title.

Grand Canyon’s Mark Nikolaev completed the backstroke triple, taking the 200 back after winning the 50 and 100 earlier in the meet. His 1:45.28 earned him the win by almost two seconds. GCU earned three more big wins, with Daniil Antipov taking the 50 and 200 fly and Jacob Lambros taking the 100 free. Antipov touched in 21.69, while Lambros’ 43.60 got him the win in the 100. Antipov returned before the final relay to take the 200 fly in 1:46.67. GCU posted a 2:56.62 to close out the meet with a 400 free relay win, while NU touched 2nd ahead of Michigan State to give the Wildcats a .5 point lead to win them the meet.
