Brazilian Sprinter Gabriel Cardenes Commits to Arizona Wildcats

  1 Lauren Neidigh | November 18th, 2016

The Arizona Wildcats have picked up another international recruit, as Brazil’s Gabriel Cardenes has signed his national letter of intent to join the men next season. Cardenes is a sprinter from Santos, Brazil and a member of the Brazilian Swimming Federation.

Last season, Cardenes lowered his best times in the sprint freestyles at the 2016 Jose Finkel Trophy. There, he went short course meters bests of 22.37 in the 50 free, 48.89 in the 100 free, and 1:49.43 in the 200 free.

“I chose Arizona because the coaches made me feel very confident and comfortable about my future career as a swimmer and student. There’s no doubts about the incredible academic and swimming environment too. I’m really excited to help my new team and family of Wildcats!”

Cardenes’ Top Times (Short Course Meters):

  • 50 free- 22.37
  • 100 free- 48.89
  • 200 free- 1:49.43

Cardenes’ could be an immediate scorer at the Pac-12 Championships if his speed translates into yards as expected. His converted time in the 50 free is 20.15, which bodes well for the Wildcats as it would’ve been good enough to score in the B-final at the conference meet last season. Adding another sprinter to the roster should also help them fill the gap left when Pac-12 finalist Renny Richmond graduates at the end of this season.
