Four meet records fell on the second day of Brazil’s 2016 junior championship meet, the Julio de Lamare Trophy.
The meet features two age classes: Junior-1 for swimmers born in 1999 and Junior-2 for those born in 1997 or 1998.
The big swim of day 1 was Guilherme Costa‘s 1500 free, where his 15:14.04 checked in as the third-fastest time in Brazilian history for any age. There were no swims of that caliber on day 2, but four meet records fell on a night where the general level of swimming was higher than it was on the opening day.
Meet records fell in both girls 200 frees. In the Junior 1 class, Maria Paula Heitmann of Minas was 2:01.69 to break the meet record and win by a dominating 3 seconds. One age group up, Gabrielle Roncatto was 2:02.40 to pick up the meet record for Unisanta and a nearly-full-second win.
A very tight race in the Junior 1 girls 100 fly saw Heitmann just miss a second win. It was SESI’s Clarissa Rodrigues who won 1:01.30 to 1:01.56, and Rodrigues also broke a meet record.
And Heitmann did take down a second meet record near the end, joining a Minas mixed 4×50 medley relay to go 1:47.66 for the win. She was joined by Gabriel Fantoni (25.80 back), Yuri Querino (27.96 breast) and Yasmin Preusse (26.30 free), and went 27.97 on the fly leg.
Heitmann is one of several Brazilian youth stars competing at the Julio de Lamare who have committed to join the NCAA in the United States. She’ll swim for the Indiana Hoosiers.
