Mid-Distance Freestyler Tom Schab Commits to Iowa Hawkeyes

The Iowa Hawkeyes have picked up California-based freestyler Tom Schab of Clovis Swim Club for their class of 2021.

Schab excels at mid-distance freestyle, with the 500 free being his marquee event.

TOP TIMES

Times in SCY unless otherwise noted.

  • 200 free – 1:44.76
  • 500 free – 4:31.50 (4:05.03 LCM)
  • 1650 free – 15:58.29
  • 200 IM – 1:56.13

At the 2016 CIF Central Section D1 Championships, Schab finished third in both the 200 IM and the 500 free, clocking best times in both races. Additionally, he split a 26.68 on Clovis West High School’s 200 medley relay, which would finish first at that meet.

Schab is closest to Big Ten conference scoring salience in the 500 free, where it took a 4:27 to make it into the C final last season. Notably, no Hawkeye men were able to score in the 500 at B1G’s last year, making Schab a solid add to the mid-distance group.
