Steins Sets 50 Backstroke Record Twice in One Day at Latvian National Champs

Kristina Steins ended her run at the Latvian National Championships by breaking the women’s 50 backstroke national record twice in one day. Steins first broke her own record of 29.36, which she set in May, qualifying for the finals in a time of 29.29. She went on to win the event in a time of 29.05 breaking the record she set in the prelims.

Dana Kolidzeja also set a new Latvian record in the women’s 50 breaststroke posting a 32.11 breaking her own record of 32.21, which she set in May.

The men’s event ended with a photo finish between Filipp Provorkov and Nikolajs Maskalenko. Provorkov won the event in a time of 28.33 followed by Maskalenko who hit the wall in a time of 28.38.

The men’s 50 backstroke was also an extremely close race between Gytis Stankevicius and Paul Le Nguyen of Vietnam. Stankevicius finished in a time of 25.96 followed by Nguyen, who set a new Vietnamese national record posting a time of 26.00.

The men’s 200 butterfly and women’s 200 IM were not as close. Osvald Nitski won the men’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:00.11 over four seconds ahead of the field while Alona Ribakova took the women’s 200 IM in a time of 2:22.43 over three seconds ahead of the next competitor.

Two swimmers from Azerbaijan dominated the distance events. Fatima Alkaramova won the women’s 800 freestyle in a time of 9:33.77 while Maksym Shemberev took the men’s 1500 freestyle in a time of 15:30.50.

  • Women’s 200 butterfly – Mauela Battipaglia – 2:26.83
  • Women’s 100 freestyle – Nastassia Karakouskaya – 56.50
  • Men’s 100 freestyle – Baslakov Iskender – 50.54
  • Men’s 200 IM – Uvis Kalnins – 2:03.99
