Five Already-Qualified 2016 Olympic Teamers Scratch Prelims on Day 4

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

Nation’s Capital’s Jack Conger has scratched the men’s 100 free for this morning, after clocking a time fast enough yesterday to finish third yesterday and score a relay spot on the U.S. Olympic team. Conger was seeded 11th.

Also out of the event is Cal’s Tom Shields, who was seeded 18th, and 36th seed Ryan Murphy, who won a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic team last night.

Of course, the big news in the men’s 100 free prelims this morning is a scratch from second seed Michael Phelps

2016 Olympic team member Maya DiRado of Stanford is cutting the 200 fly this morning, presumably to rest for her 200 IM final tonight. DiRado held the third seed.

Ella Eastinalso of Stanford, is using the same strategy as DiRado, scratching the 200 fly to focus on her 200 IM final, which is the best chance for her to make the Olympic team.

Fifteenth seed Elizabeth Beisel of Bluefish, who fractured her finger yesterday in the warmup pool, has also dropped the women’s 200 fly prelims. North Baltimore’s nineteenth seed Becca Mann will not be swimming the event either.

Sunday’s 400 IM champion Chase Kalisz of North Baltimore has dropped the 200 breast, after coming in seeded 11th.

All the scratches seem logical to me except I agree with Dru, I wish Conger and Murphy had put down at least a prelim time in the 100, and even Phelps.

a little disappointed murphy, conger and shields didn’t at least swim the prelim..

murphy doesn’t have an event today, so would have liked to see him swim the prelim and the semi.. but the final is right after the 200 back semi

I can understand conger and shields not swimming the semi with 200 fly after it.. but at least get a time in there to be considered for the 4×100 free relay

with conger and murphy already being on the team in other events, if they threw down a fast time they could have been put on the morning team for the 4×100 free relay and potential earn a spot for the final

Darn Conger could’ve had an incredible relay split in the 4×100

About to say that was a bad choice because it is probably his only other realistic chance
