Danish Swimming Union Releases European Championships Roster

The Danish Swimming Union accepted ten men and women to represent Denmark in the upcoming European Aquatics Championships. The qualification roster for the Danish Swimming Union was released last night. The ten swimmers selected swam at the Danish Open in Copenhagen, which ran April 13-17, and represent the pinnacle of achievement in national swimming.

In 2014, Denmark placed 2nd in the swimming portion of series, with a total medal count of 9, including 6 gold.

Mie Nielsen, who was co-champion two years ago in the 100 back with Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, will once again be a top contender at the meet as she currently holds the top time in Europe in the 100m backstroke.

Jeanette Ottesen ranks 2nd in Europe in the 100m fly behind only Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom, who is the World Record holder in the event.

Other contenders include American-trained Anton Ipsen, who is currently ranked 9th in the 400m freestyle in Europe, and the defending 200m butterfly champion Viktor Bromer, whose chances to repeat become stronger with Laszlo Cseh opting not to compete.

The World Record holder Rikke Møller Pedersen is ranked third in the 200m breaststroke and is only a second behind Yuliya Efimova of Russia (who may or may-not be eligible to race at this meet).

Denmark’s Pernille Blume and Jeanette Ottesen both hold rankings in the 50m freestyle. Ottesen placed third in the event at the last Championships.

The LEN European Aquatics Championships will take place May 9-22 at the London Aquatics Centre in London, England (with the exception of water polo, which already happened). The ten swimmers representing Team Denmark will be swimming with the ultimate goal of finalizing qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
