Alabama Swimming and Diving Celebrates Another Record-Smashing Season

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – For the third year in a row, the Alabama men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams broke a slew of school records, so Tuesday, for the third year in a row, the Crimson Tide held a record-smashing ceremony on the deck of the Don Gambril Olympic Pool in the Alabama Aquatic Center.

The Crimson Tide replaced 18 slots on its record board – nine on the women’s side and nine on the men’s – including six relay and 12 individual marks. Among those records 14 were short course (25 yards) records and four were long course (50 meter).

The Crimson Tide’s top record setting performance came in the 200 medley relay when Connor Oslin, Pavel Romanov, Luke Kaliszak and Kristian Gkolomeev set the school record with a 1:22.28, coming within .01 of the NCAA record on the way to winning Alabama’s first NCAA relay title.

On the short course side of things, the Crimson Tide bettered eight individual records and six relay marks this season.

·         Men’s 100 freestyle – Kristian Gkolomeev 41.52

·         Women’s 100 freestyle – Emma Saunders 48.89

·         Women’s 500 freestyle – Mia Nonnenberg 4:43.98

en’s 100 backstroke – Caroline Korst 52.49

·         Men’s 200 backstroke – Connor Oslin 1:39.85

·         Women’s 200 backstroke – Emma Saunders 1:53.88

·         Men’s 100 butterfly – Luke Kaliszak 45.18

·         Women’s 400 individual medley – Mia Nonnenberg 4:06.99

Relay Records –

·         Women’s 200 medley relay – Caroline Korst, Bridget Blood, Hannah Musser, Temarie Tomley 1:37.21

·         Women’s 400 medley relay – Caroline Korst, Bridget Blood, Hannah Musser, Emma Saunders – 3:33.02

·         Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay – Emma Saunders, Temarie Tomley, Hannah Musser, Mia Nonnenberg 7:08.70

·         Men’s 200 medley relay – Connor Oslin, Pavel Romanov, Luke Kaliszak, Kristian Gkolomeev 1:22.28

·         Men’s 400 freestyle relay – Laurent Bams, Christopher Reid, Robert Howard, Kristian Gkolomeev 2:49.96

·         Men’s 800 freestyle relay – Christopher Reid, Alex Gray, Matthew Adams, Crews Wellford 6:20.09

On the long course side of things it was all about the backstroke, with both men’s and women’s records falling during the 2015-16 school year.

Individual Long Course Records –

·         100-meter backstroke – Christopher Reid 53.12

·         200-meter backstroke –Christopher Reid 1:58.31

·         100-meter backstroke – Emma Saunders 1:02.63

·         200-meter backstroke – Emma Saunders 2:15.45

The Tide’s record-breaking season led the men to a sixth place NCAA finish, their best since 1983, and the women to a 28th place NCAA finish, their best since 2005.
