The Washington State Cougars defeated conference foes, the Utah Utes by 4 points in their last duel meet of the season, for a final score of 149-145.
The Utes started the meet off with a victory in the 200 medley relay, when the A team of Megan Kawaguchi, Genevieve Robertson, Jenna Marsh and Gillian St. John touched the pads in 1:43.72, just out touching the Cougars A team, who finished in 1:43.75.
Washington State took the victories in the next few events, starting with a win in the 1000 free, when junior Kendra Griffin touched the pads in 10:30.11. The next event was won by the Cougars double winner Addisynn Bursch, who finished 1st in the 200 free and 200 IM in times of 1:52.07 and 2:04.35 respectively. Her teammate Jasmine Margetts was also a double winner, finishing ahead of the field in both the 100 back (52.26) and the 200 back (2:01.11).
The Utes also worked to garner valuable points and went on to post a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 breast, with Stina Colleou finishing 1st in 1:04.43, Brianna Francis 2nd in 1:04.67 and Robertson 3rd in 1:04.93. In the 200 breast, it was Robertson who touched the pads first, in 2:17.35, followed by Colleou in 2:18.10.
The Cougars then went on to post a pair 1-2-3 sweeps of their own. First in the 50 free, with Haley Rose Love, Hailey Johnson and Hannah Bruggman finishing in times of 23.93, 24.01 and 24.02 respectively. Then in the 500 free, with Rachel Thompson taking the victory in 5:06.51, Griffin 2nd in 5:08.24 and Elise Locke just behind her in 5:08.97.
Locke also took home first place points for her team, winning the 200 fly in 2:03.58. In the 100 fly, it was her teammate Anna Brolin who earned the points, finishing 1st in 56.03, just splits ahead of Marsh who finished in 56.23.
The 100 free ended in a tie between two Utes, St. John and Dorien Butter when they both touched the pads in 52.01, Bruggman of the Cougars was 3rd in 52.10.
In the diving events, it was Lauren Hall who was a double winner for the Utes, finishing the 1m with a score of 262.42 and the 3m with a score of 272.02.
Utah took the victory in the final relay, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Cougars overall. The A team of Rhianna Williams, St. John, Darby Wayner and Butter clocked in in 3:28.17, more than 3 seconds ahead of Washington States’s A team, who finished in 3:31.41.
