Michigan’s Klein Named Big Ten Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Michigan’s Chris Klein was named Big Ten men’s swimmer of the week after winning the 200 LCM IM while helping Michigan to a win at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic. Klein touched the wall in 2:05.48 to win the event. Matt Barnard earned another diver of the week award as he won the platform event at the UGA Diving Invite. Freshman of the week went to Erik Juliusson as he won the 100 IM (52.52) and 100 back (51.14) at the FAU Sprint Classic.

Swimmer of the Week

Chris Klein, Michigan

Jr. – Ann Arbor, Mich. – Pioneer

  • Collected a first-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley (2:05.48) and added a trio of second-place touches in the 50-meter breaststroke (28.53), 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.25) and 200-meter medley relay (1:40.53) to lead Michigan to a first-place finish at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic
  • Times in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke convert to NCAA provisional qualifying times, per NCAA conversion standards
  • The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor

Diver of the Week

Matt Barnard, Minnesota 

Jr. – Brisbane, Australia – Orniston College

  • Finished first in the platform event with 432.20 points, second in three-meter diving with 390.15 points and eighth in the one-meter event with a score of 316.55 at the University of Georgia Diving Invitational
  • Scores in all three events are NCAA Zone Diving qualifying marks
  • Earns his sixth career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Matt Barnard (Dec. 9, 2015)

 

Freshman of the Week
Erik Juliusson, Purdue

Laguna Beach, Calif. – Laguna Beach

  • Recorded a pair of first-place finishes in the 100-yard individual medley (52.52) and 100-yard backstroke (51.14), and added a third-place touch in the 100-yard freestyle (47.42) at the Florida Atlantic University Sprint Invitational
  • Led the Boilermakers to a first-place finish over seven teams
  • Earns his first career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Purdue Freshman of the Week: Joe Cifelli (Dec. 23, 2015)
