Hosszu Claims Four Titles on Day 2 of Hungarian SC

Katinka Hosszu bounced back from her first day at Hungarian Short Course Nationals, competing in all five contested events and winning all five. She was joined by a lot of familiar faces on the top spot of the podium; Daniel Gyurta won two titles alongside and Laszlo Cseh came away with a win.

Hosszu started off her night by winning the 50 freestyle in 24.52. It was the closest she would come to going any personal bests/national records on the day- she holds that honor with a 24.43. She followed it up with an easy 2:06.29 win in the 200 IM, 2:04.64 to capture the 200 backstroke, 1:07.10 in the 100 breaststroke and finally 53.43 to win the 100 freestyle. Of note was longtime competitior Zsuzsanna Jakabos, who finished second to Hosszu in all of the above except for the 200 backstroke.

While many of those times are pedestrian for Hosszu, her 200 IM is still fastest in the world right now and faster than all but two other swimmers recorded for the 2014-2015 short course season:

Daniel Gyurta won the 200 breaststroke easily in 2:03.47 after taking the 50 breaststroke in 27.02. Both times were well over his national (50) and world (200) records, however the 200 time puts him at the top of the world rankings:

Peter Bernek swam six seconds slower than his national record to win the 400 freestyle in 3:40.46. Laszlo Cseh was able to hang with Bernek for the first half of the race before Bernek unleashed a 1:49.3 back half to win by over three seconds. That time also ranks Bernek at the top of the world:

The rest of the men’s events went in more pedestrian fashion. Krisztian Takacs led a Egri Uszo Klub (Uszo is Hungarian for Swimming) to a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 freestyle with a 21.96. Gabor Balog won the 100 backstroke by 1/100th over David Foldhazi in 52.83.
