After Brazil’s Pedro Spajari asserted himself in the semi-finals of the men’s 100 freestyle swimming a new championship record of 48.87, it was Australia’s rising star Kyle Chalmers who came through in the final.
Chalmers posted a new championship record in 48.47, under Spajari’s time from last night and well under American Caeleb Dressel‘s previous mark of 48.97.
Chalmers was out fast, second to the 50m mark in 23.56, behind only Romania’s Robert Glinta (23.54). Chalmers then closed in 24.91, the fastest in the field and the only man under 25 seconds.
Maxime Rooney of the United States finished 2nd in 48.87, equalling Spajari’s time from the semi-final. Brazil’s Felipe Souza was 3rd in 49.30, and Spajari had to settle for 4th in 49.56, well off his semi-final time. Glinta faded to 7th (49.87).
Matheus Santana‘s junior world record of 48.25 remains.
Chalmers, Rooney and Spajari will do battle again in the men’s medley relay at the end of the session.
