Michael Andrew Re-Breaks Own 100m Breaststroke NAG Record

August 06th, 2015 National, News, Previews & Recaps

16-year old swimmer Michael Andrew has re-broken his own National Age Group Record in the 100m breaststroke yet again this summer.  After having set the men’s 15-16 record at 1:01.00 in mid-July, Andrew crushed that mark by over three tenths in San Antonio tonight to clock a new record of 1:00.68 at U.S. Nationals.

Andrew competed in tonight’s B-Final of the event, along with age group rival, Reece Whitley.  Andrew won the B-Final with his 1:00.68 time and would have actually placed fourth in the A-final with his blistering speed.

Of note, Whitley raced a 1:01.06 to finish fourth in that same B-Final, maintaining his status behind Andrew as the second fastest performer of all time in the men’s 15-16 age group.

All-time top 5 in the age group:

  1. Michael Andrew 1:00.68
  2. Reece Whitley 1:01.06
  3. Carsten Vissering 1:01.94
  4. Christian Higgins 1:02.29
  5. Kevin Cordes 1:02.45

Comparative splits between Andrew’s old and new records:

July record 28.58 32.42 1:01.00
New record 28.53 32.15 1:00.68

The new clocking puts Michael Andrew just .03 away from the current World Junior Record of 1:00.65 held by Russia’s Anton Chupkov.  Chupkov set that mark this past June in Baku at the European Games.

Let’s not forget Chandler Bray, who swam a 1:01.79 in the C final. Places him 3rd all time in 15-16yo.

There another up and comer in 14 year old Jake Foster of the Cincinnati Marlin dropping a 1:05.68 in the 100 breast and a 2:19.46 in the 200 breast this summer at the OH Central Zone Section 3 Championships. He was also a part of the Marlin’s relay that set new NAG records for the 200 and 400 Meter Medleys Relays. The Marlins have a rich history of outstanding age groupers setting NAG records for decades.

Whoa! Great work Andrew! He really came home fast. Love to see him and Mr. Whitley improve.
