The No. 3 Cardinal remained undefeated in the Pac-12 with a 131 to 100 win over the host Arizona State Sun Devils. Stanford took home six individual event wins and one relay win, with four freshmen claiming event victories.
The Cardinal kicked off the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 Medley Relay. Stanford’s A team touched first in 3:41.19, while the B team followed up for second (3:42.49) ahead of the Cardinal C team (3:45.35).
Sun Devil Anna Olasz took the 1000 Free (10:00.68) ahead of Stanford’s Tara Halsted (10:07.57) in the first individual event of the meet.
Stanford responded with a 1-2 sweep of the 200 Free led by Lia Neal (1:49.15). Her teammate Nicole Stafford was just behind for second in 1:49.86, ahead of Sun Devil Kat Simonovic (1:50.65).
Cardinal Janet Hu took her first event win of the meet in the 50 Free (23.15) to lead a 1-2-3 Stanford finish. Her Stanford teammates Julia Ama (23.32) and Katie Olsen (23.66) touched second and third, respectively.
Stanford continued their momentum with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 IM led by double event winner Simone Manuel (2:01.72). Cardinals Grace Carlson (2:04.82) and Lindsey Engel (2:05.55) finished second and third ahead of ASU’s Alex Popa (2:06.24).
ASU swept the diving events, with Mara Aiacoboae taking first in the 3-meter in 320.25 points and Sun Devil Hailey Casper scoring first in the 1-meter (302.33 points).
Stanford’s Ally Howe took the 200 Fly (2:00.44) ahead of ASU’s Lori Layne Kremer (2:03.14). Cardinal Mackenzie Stein touched third in 2:04.15.
Cardinal freshman Lindsey Engel took home an individual event win in the 100 Free (51.14), just ahead of Sun Devil Alysha Bush (51.37). Stanford’s Nicole Stafford was just over one tenth of a second behind for third in 51.50.
Janet Hu took her second event win of the meet in the 200 Back with an NCAA B cut of 1:57.57. She finished ahead of a 2-3 ASU finish led by Melanie Busch (2:02.90). Her teammate Jennifer Morgan was third in 2:03.78.
Stanford continued their event winning streak with a first-place finish from Allison Brown in the 500 Free (4:52.30). ASU’s Anna Olasz touched second in 4:58.17 ahead of Cardinal Grace Carlson (5:04.70).
ASU took a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 Breast, which was led by freshman Jorie Caneta (2:16.27). Her teammates Tory Houston (2:17.23) and Ivana Ninkovic (2:26.40) were second and third.
The Sun Devils continued with a 1-2 finish in the 200 Free relay. ASU’s A team touched first in 1:33.61, and the B team finished second in 1:36.72.

Bobo: Actually the only Stanford girl under 59 on the Stanford roster has been Katie Olsen at NCs last year. Although Heidi Poppe has the fastest 100 this season with a 59.21 barely over Sarah Hasse 59.31 at the Art Adamson meet in Nov. Not sure why Katie Olsen wasn’t there. I’m sure the coaches will go with experience (all other things equal) in the relays; getting DQ’d in a relay would be a deathblow (Cal last year). Agreed about KC, if she does get humming in the next month, what a complete group from top to bottom in the breast, awesome depth. That was just a prediction. I think all 3 can swim under 59 this season.

1. Who will swim the breaststroke leg in the 4X100 medley relay at NCAAs? There are so many options with Sarah Haase, Katie Olsen and Heidi Poppe. All can swim under 59. It makes Cal dream! Perhaps you could lend them one of these girls. 🙂
2. What happens to KC Moss for 2 years?.
Very promising breaststroker in the junior ranks.
Best times 1.02.01/2.12.86 in 2011/2012 season
1.01.97/2.13.57 in 2012/2013 season, her freshman season at Stanford
Then 1.03.35/2.16.02 last season.
Then 2.19.09 last November at Art Adamson Invitational.
I see 2.23 this weekend.

You’re correct about that, but I agree that calling it a sweep is a little mis-leading and doesn’t paint the real picture of what happened. The 200 was a great race, Jorie Canneta came from behind and stole the race from the Stanford swimmer, very nice swim from the freshman.
Even if you report that they were exhibitions, can you please also report the times of the top swims in events like the 200 Breast and 200 Free Relay? You don’t have to say they “won.”
