Cardinal Men Take Down Wildcats in Pac-12 Showdown

The Stanford men topped the host Arizona Wildcats 160 to 101 at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center, with the Cardinal taking nine of 14 events in Tucson. Now 4-0, the Stanford men will look to continue their winning streak in their duel against Arizona State later this weekend.

Arizona started strong with a win in the 200 Medley Relay (1:29.01), just ahead of Stanford’s A team (1:29.41). Arizona’s B team claimed third in 1:31.06.

The Wildcats continued their streak with a 1-2 finish in the 1000 Free by freshman Nick Hogsed (9:20.46) and Ty Fowler (9:22.46), with just two seconds separating first and second. Stanford’s Liam Egan touched third in 9:27.19.

Stanford responded with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 200 Free, led by Sean Duggan (1:38.89). Just two one-hundredths of a second behind for second was Duggan‘s teammate Drew Cosgarea in 1:38.91. Stanford teammates Jeff Garnier (1:39.79) and Chris Pickard (1:40.65).

The Cardinal kept the sweeps rolling with a 1-2 finish in the 100 Back led by freshman Patrick Conaton (49.04). His teammate Ryan Arata followed up for second (50.28) ahead of Arizona’s Michael Meyer (50.60).

Arizona’s Kevin Cordes picked up the momentum for the Wildcats with a win in the 100 Breast (54.26) ahead of teammate Andrew Sovero (55.41). Stanford’s Daniel Le touched third in 56.73.

It was a close race between Stanford teammates Tom Kremer (1:47.88) and Gray Umbach (1:47.93) for the win in the 200 Fly. Freshman Arizona teammates Justin Wright (1:49.81) and Nick Thorne (1:51.30) took third and fourth, respectively.

Arizona’s Bradley Tandy (20.11) out-touched Stanford’s David Nolan (20.12) by just one one-hundredth of a second for the win in the 50 Free. Nolan‘s teammate Thomas Stephens was third in 20.51.

Nolan turned around to win the 100 Free in 44.11 ahead of his teammates Thomas Stephens (44.71) and Sam Perry (45.36) for a 1-2-3 Cardinal sweep. Arizona’s Bradley Tandy touched fourth in 45.51, with all four swimmers competing in the previous race.

Stanford freshman Patrick Conaton completed a sweep of the Backstroke events with a first-place finish in the 200 Back (1:47.96) ahead of teammate Drew Cosgarea (1:48.69). Following up just behind for third was Arizona Wildcat Michael Meyer in 1:48.86.

Wildcat Kevin Cordes took his second event of the meet and swept the Breaststroke events with a sub-two-minute win in the 200 Breast (1:59.16) ahead of his teammate Andrew Sovero (2:02.02). Just behind Sovero was Stanford’s Max Williamson in 2:02.92.

Stanford swept the 500 Free with a 1-2 finish by teammates Liam Egan (4:30.88) and Danny Thomson (4:33.80). Arizona’s Nick Hogsed touched just behind for third in 4:34.11, and his teammate Ty Fowler was just half a second behind in 4:34.63.

The Cardinal completed a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Fly, led by Gray Umbach in a 48.64. His teammates Andrew Liang (49.08) and Tom Kremer (49.67) followed up for second and third, respectively.

Stanford’s Max Williamson captured the last individual event win of the night with a first-place finish in the 200 IM (1:49.47) ahead of Arizona’s Michael Meyer (1:51.21). Williamson‘s teammate Curtis Ogren touched third in 1:52.44.

The Cardinal finished off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 Free Relay. Stanford’s A team touched in 2:58.67 to take the win, and the Cardinal B team followed up second in 3:01.62.
