Kornev, Kolesnikov, Kozhakin Shine on Final Day of Russian Swimming Championships

2026 RUSSIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

As has been the story throughout the entirety of the Russian Swimming Championships, Egor Kornev wrapped up his stellar showing in Kazan with yet another Russian Record, this time, besting his day-old mark in the 100 free with a blistering 46.96 to close out the meet.

Yesterday, Kornev surged to a milestone swim, cracking the 47-second barrier in the 100 free in 46.99. Today, that time is a thing of the past, as he improved on his own World #1-ranked time this season by three hundredths of a second.

That time now puts him in a tie with Caeleb Dressel for the 6th fastest performer in the history of the event. When he first broke 47, that swim made him only the 7th man in history to do so. As for the performance ranking itself, it ties Dressel for the 13th-fastest 100 freestyle in history.

As for the rest of the meet, one of the highly anticipated races of the meet, the men’s 100 back, lived up to the hype, as only two tenths separated the top two performers, as Kliment Kolesnikov managed to hold off Pavel Samusenko‘s quick opening 50 to hold on and win in 52.52. Samusenko touched just behind in 52.72, making him the 7th fastest performer in the event this season. Kolesnikov was just one hundredth faster in the semifinals yesterday at 52.51, which slots him in at 4th in the world rankings this season.

After firing off a 59.30 in the semifinals, championship final top seed Kirill Prigoda was facing a new monster in Ivan Kozhakin, who blasted out a 58.93 finals swim to down the current Russian record holder in Prigoda. Prigoda was just nine hundredths off of what he swam in the semifinal, but ultimately it wasn’t enough to hold off Kozhakin. Though the fast time, and one that would rank him 4th in the world this season, Kozhakin has already been 58.91 this season at the Russian Swimming Cup. However, Prigoda’s 59.30 from the semis ranks him 9th in the world this season.

The women’s 100 breast saw a battle of eras, as Yulia Efimova and Evgeniia Chikunova finished in a colossal 1-2, separated by just nine hundredths of a second. Efimova would end up taking the top spot in 1:06.90, and Chikunova would touch just a hair after her in 1:06.99. That time for Efimova marks her fastest of the season, and moves her up to 20th in the world this season, while Chikunova has been as fast as 1:06.84 at the Russian Swimming Cup in April, which slots her in at 18th in the world this season.

In the women’s 100 back, Vavara Filippova took the nail-biting win in 1:01.00, taking the top spot in a final that saw seven of the eight women crack 1:02. Just behind her was Veronika Pugacheva in 1:01.05. Just outside of the top two was Daria Zarubenkova, who had to settle for 3rd in 1:01.11. Despite the close finish, none of those times are all that near the top 25 this season, as the top 23 performers so far this season have touched under a minute.

The day kicked off with the women’s 200 IM, where Yana Shakirova posted the only time under 2:13, winning in 2:12.79. She was followed by a pair of 2:13 performers, Victoria Mashkina and Irina Zvyagintseva, in 2:13.36 and 2:13.68, respectively. Shakirova’s time still puts her over a second outside of the world top 25 this season.

Maria Osetrova claimed the women’s 50 fly title in 25.60. Top seed entering this final, Alexandra Kuznetsova, finished 3rd in 25.78 after powering to a 25.59 yesterday in the semifinals, the 7th-fastest in the world this season. Osterova’s time earns her a spot at 8th this season in the event.
