Kornev Continues Historic Outing on Day 5 of Russian National Championships

2026 RUSSIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Continuing his stellar performances in Kazan, rising Russian star Egor Kornev built on his 21.06 50 freestyle from day 4 of the Russian Championships with two more Russian records on day 5.

Kornev first took to the 100 free semifinal, where he blasted a 46.99, the first time in his career that he had ever dipped under the 47-second mark. That time not only marked a career best but also a national best, slicing Kliment Kolesnikov‘s nearly five-year-old Russian record of 47.11 from the Tokyo Olympic Semifinal in the event.

That swim also earned him a time atop the world standings this season, ending Chris Guiliano‘s three-month reign atop the 100 free this season. He also moves up to 7th all-time in the events performer rankings.

As for the finals of day 5, in the women’s 200 fly, it was Victoria Tokareva outlasting a tight and competitive field to snag the win in 2:11.49. The top three, which also consisted of Alexandra Vermenich (2:11.70) and Daria Rogozhinova (2:11.79), were all separated by less than three tenths of a second.

Daria Klepikova surged to the win in the women’s 100 free final, outlasting Alexandra Kuznetsova (53.80) by just over three tenths of a second in 53.45. That time sits about a half second off of her best from last summer’s World Championships in Singapore, when she clocked 52.98. However, it does put her within striking distance of the top ten in the world this season, as she sits 11th, just four hundredths behind Gretchen Walsh in 53.40. Kuznetsova’s time was good enough for 18th in the world this season.

The only other championship finals contested on day 5 were the men’s and women’s 800 freestyles.

In the men’s race, Saveliy Luzin controlled the swim from start to finish, touching more than four seconds faster than anybody else in the event in 7:50.89. This time marked a near-three-second drop from his former best of 7:53.82 at the 2024 Russian Championships and simultaneously earned him the 21st spot on the season’s performers rankings in the event.

On the women’s side, it was another one-sided affair as Arina Pantina secured the victory by more than four seconds in 8:32.59, which slots her narrowly outside the top 25 performers in the world this season in the women’s 800 free.

His performance in 2025 Singapore Worlds has made him a cynosure, from Russia, in the international swimming arena for the first time. And he’s reinforing this status only to be counted in as one of favorites in events such as 100 free, 50 free.
