Amelia Gipson enjoyed a great day of racing at the St. Mary’s City Sectionals on Saturday, winning two individual events on day three of the competition.
Gipson, who represents Germantown Academy Aquatic Club and is committed to Harvard for the fall of 2027, kicked off the night with a victory in the 200 fly. The 17-year-old stopped the clock in 1:59.80, slicing almost half a second off of her previous best time (2:00.22) from December and landing her at #65 on the ranking of top times this season in the girls’ 17-18 age group.
Her swim also marked the only sub-2:00 performance in the field, as Gipson charged into the wall over three seconds ahead of runner-up Sofie Vanyo (2:02.93).
Gipson was back in action later in the session, turning in a top performance in the 500 free. She threw down a lifetime best time of 4:48.14, shaving 1.61 off her former personal best to pick up her second individual victory of the night.
Gipson’s time in the 500 free tied her at 34th on the list of top times this season in the girls’ 17-18 age group; she shares the spot with Bella Teply from Ohio.
Earlier in the meet, Gipson earned her first victory of the meet as part of the winning 800 free relay team. She also took 2nd in the 1000 free (9:57.65) and 400 IM (4:18.45) and 3rd in the 200 free (1:49.69), setting personal best times in all but the 200 free.
Other Day 3 Winners and Highlights
- Mercersburg Academy’s Joshua Lopez won the boys’ 200 fly in 1:48.46, dropping a second from his lifetime best to narrowly beat out runner-up Paul Mullen of Nation’s Capital (1:48.79).
- Molly Workman, who swims for Nittany Lion Aquatic Club, won the girls’ 50 free with a time of 22.73 and was the only competitor in the field to crack the 23 second barrier.
- The boys’ 50 free title went to Liam Mac Colla of 92nd St. Y Flying Dolphins, who touched in 20.12.
- Kelsey McPeek won the girls’ 200 breast in a personal best time of 2:13.30. The 17-year-old, who swims for Parkland Swimming Club and is set to compete for the University of Delaware in the fall, shaved almost two seconds off her lifetime best and marked the 34th-fastest time this season in the girls’ 17-18 age group.
- Behind McPeek, Cumberland Valley Aquatic Club’s Ava Buhrman turned in yet another top performance, taking 2nd in the 200 breast in a best time of 2:13.55. Buhrman knocked over three seconds off her previous personal best, marking the 19th-fastest time this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group.
- Nation’s Capital Swim Club’s Chuck Katis prevailed in the boys’ 200 breast in 1:57.26, securing the victory by just one-tenth of a second as Gavin Tran claimed the runner-up spot in 1:57.36.
- The girls’ 100 back saw Lila Sherman of The FISH claim the title in 55.49, shaving .08 off her lifetime best and marking the only sub-56 performance in the field.
- Mercersburg Academy’s Matt Krause emerged victorious in the boys’ 100 back, turning in a winning time of 47.31. He was the only one in the field to break 48 seconds.
- Olivier Ritchey of Germantown Academy Aquatic Club won the boys’ 500 free in 4:29.14, knocking almost four seconds off of his personal best time over the course of the day and breaking 4:30 for the first time.
- Cumberland Valley secured the victory in the girls’ 200 medley relay in 1:44.35 thanks to the team of Buhrman, Brooke Boland, Addison Buckman and Mary Boone. Buhrman led off in 25.48 on the backstroke leg, knocking well over a second off her lifetime best in the 50 back and landing her at #37 on the ranking of top times this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group.
- Lancaster Aquatic Club took home the title in the boys’ 200 medley relay, with the team of Brody Reber, Ben Herres, Henry Paterson and Jomar Hidalgo combining for a time of 1:32.94. Reber led off with a time of 22.45 on the backstroke leg, shaving .38 off his best time and marking the fastest opening split in the field by over a second.
- The girls’ 400 free relay title went to Nittany Lion Aquatic Club, with the team of Workman, Isla Reite, Molly Staniar and Gabby Siekman posting a winning time of 3:26.06. Workman threw down a time of 48.31 as the leadoff, shaving .04 off her lifetime best and marking the only sub-50 performance on the opening 100.
- Rockville Montgomery Swim Club won the boys’ 400 free relay in 3:06.65, thanks to the team of Maximus Devinney, Daniel Mulla, Michael Kueh and Jeremiah Germosen.
