The 2026 St. Mary’s City Sectionals kicked off last night in Maryland, as the meet got underway with the distance events.

Ava Buhrman, who trains with Cumberland Valley Aquatic Club, won the girls’ 1000 free in a lifetime best time of 9:51.87. The 15-year-old knocked almost nine seconds off her previous best time (10:00.43), breaking the 10 minute barrier for the first time and clinching the victory by almost six seconds.

Buhrman’s performance bumped her up the national rankings in the event, as it marked the 17th-fastest time in the country this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group.

Taking the runner-up spot behind Buhrman was 17-year-old Amelia Gipson of Germantown Academy Aquatic Club, who stopped the clock in 9:57.65 to mark a new best time by nine seconds. Gipson, who is committed to swim for Harvard starting in the fall of 2027, was the only other competitor in the field to go under 10 minutes. Her performance landed her at #32 on the list of top times this season in the girls’ 17-18 age group.

The boys’ 1650 free went to Alex Parent from Sunrise Swim Club. The 18-year-old touched in 15:34.22, which was about 16 seconds off of his best.

The FISH’s Henry Rossman snagged the runner-up spot in a personal best time of 15:35.82, marking a significant time drop of almost 20 seconds. Rossman’s performance launched the 16-year-old up to the 36th spot on the ranking of top times this season in the boys’ 15-16 age group.
