3rd-Seeded Robbie Renwick Scratches 100 Free at GBR Olympic Trials

2016 BRITISH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS/OLYMPIC TRIALS

Scotsman Robbie Renwick, the 3rd qualifier into the final of the men’s 100 free, has scratched out of the event final on Thursday evening in Glasgow. His primary event, the 200 free, comes tomorrow.

Renwick swam 49.32 in prelims of the 100 free, which qualified him for the final behind Ben Proud (48.68) and his Stirling teammate Duncan Scott (48.81).

The qualifying time in the event to swim individually, as the event winner, is 48.16, and the 2% “consideration time” is 48.60. Renwick’s personal best in the event is 49.12.

The relay time, compiled of the top four finishers for finals, to be considered is a 3:14.55 at a minimum. Britain technically has a spot locked down in that event for the Olympics via their 10th-place finish at Worlds in 3:15.70, but weren’t faster than 3:14.55 even with relay starts. On the other hand, the four swimmers probable to swim the relay will already be on the team, so it’s not likely that British Swimming will pass on their entry in the event.

The prelims aggregate was 3:16.30.

Renwick didn’t swim the 400 free, an event in which he was 9th at the 2013 World Championships, and so he’s putting all of his Olympic eggs in the 200 free basket There, the “winners” qualifying standard is 1:45.91, and the 2% consideration standard is 1:46.68. Renwick’s personal best is 1:45.99, which he did at the 2009 World Championships. His best swim in a textile suit is 1:46.52.

Even if he doesn’t clear the qualification standard there (he’ll have to beat the defending World Champion James Guy for an automatic bid anyway), he’s likely to go as part of the defending-World-Champion 800 free relay regardless.

Is he just assuming that he’ll get put in the team if one is entered? James Guy should be entered into the team at the olympics. With the 200 time he did at worlds he should be on a 48 something which is faster than everyone except Proud and maybe Scott can go.

I thought Park got a DQ in London which got overturned keeping Cochrane from the final?

Actually the 2% consideration standard is 48.60

British Swimming can use relay splits from Kazan to make it to the time, and will likely use Renwick’s. Given that the top three (+Renwick) will likely be Proud, Scott and Barrett, and therefore on the plane anyway, we will almost certainly send the pre-qualified 4x100m freestyle. Given that no relay only swimmers will be needed, there is no reason not to send the team.
