New Zealand’s Erika Fairweather brought the energy in Monaco, taking down a 13-year-old championship record in the women’s 400 free final. Fairweather threw down a time of 4:01.80 to clinch the victory by three-and-a-half seconds and break the Mare Nostrum record in the event.
Fairweather’s performance knocked over a second off of the old record, which previously stood at 4:02.84. The former Mare Nostrum record, which marked both the championship record and the Monaco record, was set by France’s Camille Muffat back in 2013.
Fairweather led the pack right from the start, taking her race out in 57.76 to gain almost a one second lead at the 100-meter mark; the next fastest opening split was a 58.61, posted by Argentina’s Agostina Hein.
Fairweather carried that momentum throughout the race, continuing to extend the distance between her and the rest of the field until she got her hand on the wall at the 400-meter mark well ahead of runner-up Hein (4:05.31).
While not a best time, Fairweather’s record-breaking swim in Monaco was less than four tenths off of the season-best time (4:01.42) that she posted at the New Zealand Championships earlier this month, which ranked her fifth in the world so far this season and is the fastest she has been since February 2024. She holds a lifetime best time of 3:59.44 from the 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
The 400 free marks Fairweather’s second top three performance during the Monaco stop, as she secured silver in the 200 free (1:56.10) on night one.
