Marrit Steenbergen Blasts 52.13 100 Free, Clocks Fastest Time in the World Since 2023

2026 Mare Nostrum Tour – Monaco

Women’s 100m Freestyle – Final

GOLD – Marrit Steenbergen (Netherlands), 52.13
SILVER – Siobhan Haughey (Hong Kong), 52.67
BRONZE – Camille Spink (United States), 54.55

In the women’s 100 free final in Monaco, Dutch star Marrit Steenbergen fired off a new career best in 52.13, demolishing the Monaco Record of 52.60, previously held by Sarah Sjostrom from 2017, and makes her the fastest performer in the world this season, and keeps her at #8 all time in the event.

Steenbergen’s time keeps her at the #8 spot in the all-time performers ranking, but the swim was faster than any other performer since Siobhan Haughey‘s 52.02 from the World Cup in Berlin in October 2023, which made her the #3 performer all-time.

She previously held the top time in the world this season with her performance at the Bergen Swim Festival in April, where she battled with Haughey once again, coming out on top in 52.33 to Haughey’s 52.40.

In Monaco, Steenbergen used a massive 26.62 closing split to take control over Haughey, who turned first at the halfway point (25.36 to Steenbergen’s 25.51).

This swim marks a solid time drop for Steenbergen, who is the reigning 100 free world champion from Singapore last summer, with a time of 52.55. Her fastest time before this meet was from the 2024 World Championships in Doha, where she also won gold in 52.26.

That former time also stood as the Dutch Record in the event, which Steenbergen also bettered here.

Women’s 100 Freestyle All-Time Performers:

  1. Sarah Sjostrom – 51.71 (2017)
  2. Emma McKeon – 51.96 (2021)
  3. Siobhan Haughey – 52.02 (2023)

Interesting that her main events seemed to be (at least to me) 200IM and 200 free but then she shot up the 100 free rankings and just kept going.

Wouldn’t surprise me if she was the 3rd to go 51

The 100 has always been her best event even as far back as a 15 year old when she went 53 back in 2015.

Let’s go Marrit! It’s been too long since the last 51. There’s been a revolution in the men’s 100 since then but the women’s is stuck in the same place.

Is she the one to break Sjostrom’s WR? The speed is certainly there as she won the 50 in 24.27, and the back half is obviously there

I wouldn’t say 24.2 speed is the speed you need when Sarahs been 6 tenths faster. I don’t think she’ll break it, that record is honestly underrated, but it would be super cool if she did

Think it’s underrated in part because it was a relay lead off on a not medal relevant team instead of an individual event.

100 Free right now feels like it has half a dozen or more active swimmers that could but also none of them might actually do it

MOC, Huske, Siobhan, Steenbergen, Sarah herself (if she decides to return to the 100s), maybe Yang Junxuan and Meg Harris?
Am i missing anyone?

Just based on what you read and hear from interviews I would be surprised if she does any or many more 100’s especially as the person that was more or less the #2 swimmer for their 400 free relay has retired.

Those are the most likely ones, ya! Any of them could get it and I’d be like, sure, that makes sense. Or they all never get under 52.5 again.

As an American homer I think a few of them could make the leap into that group. But in terms of actually taking it down, prolly that mythical, “someone we haven’t heard of yet.”

(Like how Pan has the 100 free WR right now when for years it seemed like it was certainly gonna be Popovici’s going away.)

Erisman could well get there I reckon. 52.7 as a 16 yo is very impressive.

Oh yeah, i forgot about Erisman. She might actually be the favourite to do that. 52.7 at 16 is ridiculous
