The high schoolers once again dominated the competition on night three of the 2026 Boise Sectionals, headlined by Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Nathaniel Malcolm with an eye-catching performance in the men’s 100 breast.
The 18-year-old, committed to swim for Cornell next season, raced to victory in the event in a personal best time of 1:02.83, breaking the 1:03 barrier for the first time and marking the only sub-1:03 swim of the night. Malcolm came into the meet with a best time of 1:03.87 from June before stopping the clock in 1:03.31 during prelims.
Malcolm’s performance launched him up the national rankings, landing him at #9 on the list of top times this season in the boys’ 17-18 age group.
Also inching his way up the rankings was Arizona commit Cole Faut, who won the men’s 100 fly in 54.23. Faut, who swims for Phoenix Swim Club, shaved .13 off of his lifetime best, bumping him up to 18th in the country this season in the boys’ 17-18 age group from his previous spot in 21st.
Faut’s victory in the 100 fly marked his fourth individual victory of the meet, having already won the 100 free (51.24), 50 fly (24.73) and 100 back (58.38).
Aydan Prassas of Phoenix Swim Club prevailed in the men’s 50 back, throwing down a time of 26.68 and knocking almost a full second off of the lifetime best that he set just a few weeks ago in June (27.66). The 18-year-old was the only swimmer in the field to break the 27 second barrier.
On the women’s side, it was the 15-16 girls who shined. Corvallis Aquatic Team’s Zayda Miehl prevailed in the 400 free, stopping the clock in 4:18.39. While not a personal best time, the 16-year-old was the youngest competitor in the top eight and the only one in the field to go under 4:20.
Miehl touched the wall almost three seconds ahead of runner-up Leila Stafford of Flying Fish Arizona Swim Team, who logged a time of 4:21.01.
Fellow 16-year-old Sedona Stratton won the women’s 100 breast, throwing down a personal best time of 1:11.69, blowing past the 1:12 range and knocking nearly 1.5 seconds off of her former lifetime best (1:13.01).
Stratton, who swims for Sawtooth Aquatic Club in Boise, beat out runner-up Kodi Wiman for the victory by just .3, with Wiman charging in behind Stratton in 1:11.99. Stratton’s performance currently marks the 14th-fastest time this season in the girls’ 15-16 age group.
The other two women’s events of the night were won by the college swimmers, although the high schoolers continued to give them a run for their money. West Virginia University’s Baylee Sloan, who also represents Scottsdale Aquatic Club, claimed the victory in the 100 fly in 1:02.77, shaving .63 off her lifetime best in the event.
The 20-year-old narrowly secured the win over UNCW commit Phoenix Rose, who stopped the clock in 1:02.90.
Jade Castro of Washington State University took home the title in the 50 back with a time of 29.88, turning in the only sub-30 performance in the field. Racing into the wall just .14 behind Castro was 16-year-old Alva Zhao, who stopped the clock in a personal best time of 30.02.
