The 2026 Boise Sectionals kicked off on Thursday, and recently graduated Cole Faut, from Phoenix Swim Club, had a strong showing on night one.

The University of Arizona commit won two individual events and set one new personal best time. He started the evening with a win in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock in 51.24 to take a little more than a tenth off his previous best of 51.38 from May. He came into the season at 51.91  from the 2025 Sectionals meet at Mt. Hood.

He finished seven tenths ahead of Scottsdale Aquatics Club’s Brady Holubar, who swam 51.97 to finish 2nd. Phoenix Swim Club’s Tanner Sheffert finished 3rd in 52.09.

Faut also won the men’s 50 fly, stopping the clock in 24.73 to be the only swimmer under 25 seconds in the event. This swim was a little off his lifetime best of 24.35 which he set in May of this year.

The other two men’s events were won by Scottsdale Aquatics Club athletes. Nathaniel Malcolm, who is committed to Cornell for 2026, won the men’s 200 breaststroke in 2:17.60, a massive personal best time. He took more than a second off the 2:18.73 mark he set in June. His pre-season best time was 2:19.23 from August of 2025.

Mason Edmund, who just wrapped up his senior year at Ohio State in the spring, dominated the men’s 200 backstroke final, stopping the clock in 2:03.01 to finish more than three seconds ahead of 2nd place finisher Jacob Furqueron‘s 2:06.11.

This swim was a new personal best by almost a second from the 2:03.96 he swam in August of 2022.

On the women’s side, there were no double-event winners, but the college athletes shined, winning three of the four individual events. The University of Wyoming’s Tara Joyce, who just finished her junior year with the program, won the 100 freestyle in 56.88, the only sub-57 swim in the field. This was an eight tenth add from her best of 56.09, which she set last July.

She came in about half-a-second ahead of Scottsdale Aquatics Club’s Caelle Armijos 57.40 in 2nd and Leila Staffords 57.41 in 3rd. Armijo just wrapped up her freshman season at USC and Stafford is committed to Michigan for the class of 2027.

Washington State won two individual events with Emily Lundgren setting the top time in the 200 breaststroke at 2:32.98 and Addy Lewis swimming 27.60 to win the 50 fly.

Lundgren’s swim was a two second add from her personal best 2:30.09, which she set in April of 2024 and Lewis took a second off her 50 fly time of 28.71 from July of 2023.

The final women’s event went to Naomi Weibel of Flying Fish. She just wrapped up her freshman year of high school, and swam 2:17.15 to win the women’s 200 backstroke by about two seconds over Brayleigh Hoisington of Sawtooth Aquatics, who swam 2:19.32 for 2nd.

Weibel’s swim was a two second drop from the 2:19.51 she swam in July of 2025, and Hoisington dropped four tenths from the 2:19.70 she swam in May of 2026.
