As a reminder, correctly picking a swimmer to place earns:

  • 1st – 7 points
  • 2nd – 5 points
  • 3rd – 4 points
  • 4th – 3 points

The winner for day one was “Jellison” who had 50 points on the day, just one point more than user “Splash NS.” Jellison almost had the top four for the women’s 400 free correct, as they picked Summer McIntosh 1st and Lani Pallister 4th. Jellison had Katie Ledecky at 2nd when she finished 3rd and Li Bingjie 3rd when she finished 2nd. Jellison got the top three right in the men’s 400 free.

DAILY WINNERS RECEIVE

The women’s 400 freestyle saw 481 out of 504 entries pick Summer McIntosh to win the event. Although first place was “predictable,” 2nd place finisher Li Bingjie was only picked 2nd by one entry. 473 entries picked Katie Ledecky to finish 2nd when she instead finished 3rd.

Claire Weinstein of the US did not swim in prelims of the 400 freestyle, and therefore did not make finals, and was picked by 104 entries to earn bronze and 187 entries to finish 4th. It is expected that tomorrow night’s results have a similar fate for Torri Huske of the US who did not swim the 100 butterfly but was a favorite in the event.

Like the women’s 400 freestyle, a majority of the entries picked the winner correctly in the men’s 400 free. 446 entries picked Germany’s Lukas Maertens to earn the win, which he did so by 0.02 seconds ahead of Australia’s Sam Short. 326 entries picked Short to finish 2nd.

The women’s 4×100 free relay saw Australia earn the win, but the relay was only selected to win by 142 entries. The US women finished 2nd and saw a similar number of picks as 136 people picked the US women to finish 2nd. Instead, most entries picked the US women to earn the win (347 entries) with the Australian women finishing 2nd (330 entries).

Australia’s win in the men’s 4×100 freestyle was a shock to most entries as just 34 people picked the Australian men to earn the win. Even less picked Italy to finish 2nd as only 27 entries picked the Italians to earn silver. 402 entries picked the US men to earn gold, but the US fell to bronze.

I wish I did pickem entries since I predicted the top 3 finish of men’s 400 free correctly. Everything else was way off though

Tied for fifth – not too bad seeing as I… uh… misspelled “Backstroke” in my pickems screen name and only just realized this.

Better enjoy it while I can, because I’m sure my ranking will sink as the meet continues.

can we just take a second and admire the fact that over 500+ people are interested in swimming and picking the top 3’s OUTSIDE of an olympic year. whoever originally had this idea on the SS staff… hats off!

I’m not going to advocate or argue for the moral implications of this, but if sportsbooks allowed betting on swim races then that could massively grow collective interest in the sport.
