Louisville Men and Women Win Big at Louisville Invite

In the final session of the 2014 Louisville Invite, two pool records were shattered by Louisville swimmers, and the competition was intense and exciting. In the end, the University of Louisville won both the men’s and the women’s meets at home. Here’s the recap of the Sunday finals session:

200 Backstroke

In the women’s event, the top five women achieved the NCAA B cut standard. Finishing first was Allie Duff of Western Kentucky in a time of 1:57.10. A pair of Louisville swimmers, Erica Belcher and Hanna Magnuson, took second and third in 1:57.65 and 1:58.23, respectively. In the men’s event, Louisville’s Aaron Greene won in 1:43.31, followed by Missouri State’s Paul Le (1:43.50) and Josh Quallen of Louisville (1:45.62).

100 Freestyle

Kelsi Worrell of Louisville won the women’s event in a time of 48.75. Worrell’s time lowered the Ralph Wright Natatorium pool record that she set in the morning session. Taking second was Chinyere Pigot of Connecticut in 49.82, and Michelle Craddock of Western Kentucky took third in 50.13. In the men’s event, Louisville’s Grigory Tarasevich won in 44.50, beating out a tie between teammate Rudy Edelen and Missouri State junior Uvis Kalnins who both finished in 44.52.

200 Breaststroke

Western Kentucky’s Claire Conlon claimed a win in an NCAA B cut time of 2:14.61. She was chased by Louisville’s Devon Bibault, who finished second in 2:14.90. In the men’s event, Carlos Claverie of Louisville took first in 1:54.58, a new pool record. The previous pool record had been held by Louisville’s Kameron Chastain, set earlier this year. Claverie dropped an impressive nine seconds from his morning swim to achieve this time. Fabian Schwingenschlogl of Western Kentucky took second in 1:58.94 and was followed by Todd Owen of Louisville in 1:58.99. All three of these men achieved NCAA B standards.

200 Butterfly 

In the women’s event, Devon Bibault was up again in an impressive 200 Breaststroke – 200 Butterfly double, taking first in a time of 1:57.88. Following Bibault was Hannah Musser of Western Kentucky in 1:59.35. In the men’s event, Joe Brown of Louisville won in 1:49.40, followed by Matt Milson of Missouri State (1:50.01) and Michael Wolfe of Southern Illinois (1:50.55).

400 Freestyle Relay

In the final women’s event of the evening, Louisville’s A relay of Andrea Kneppers, Kelsi Worrell, Alex Sellers, and Tanja Kylliainen finished first in 3:17.88. In second was Western Kentucky’s A relay in 3:21.30, followed by Missouri State’s A relay in third with a 3:25.99. In the men’s event, Louisville claimed first again, with Thomas Dahlia, Caryle Blondell, Trevor Carroll, and Rudy Edelen touching the wall in 2:54.64, an NCAA B cut time. Missouri State was second in 2:57.79, followed by Southern Illinois in 3:00.61.
