YMCA of the Triangle breaks 200 free relay NAG for 17-18s at YNats Tuesday night

The first full night of YMCA Nationals brought the meet’s first National Age Group (NAG) record, as the YMCA of the Triangle 17-18-year-old boys went 1:33.83 in the 200 free relay.

The team of Colin Ellington,  Seth Maslowski, Chris Kohut and Alex Carson put up the time at Tuesday night finals to take seven-tenths off the old NAG, set by the Redlands Swim Team of California in 2008. All four boys are still 17 years old.

Ellington, an incoming freshman at NC State next fall, was the key piece, leading off in 23.32, the team’s second-fastest overall split, even without a relay exchange. The team was consistent, with all four members going 23s. Outside of Ellington, the other three members are all rising high school juniors:

  • Ellington: 23.32
  • Maslowski: 23.22
  • Kohut: 23.80
  • Carson: 23.49

The former record was 1:34.54, set by a Redlands team that included current pro Karl Krug as its anchor. YMCA of the Triangle was just off the overall 15-18 NAG in the relay, which was set by Ryan Hoffer and the Scottsdale Aquatic Club last year. That mark stands at 1:33.75.
