Virginia’s Sylvia Roy has entered the NCAA transfer portal. She just finished her freshman season with the Cavaliers and has three years of eligibility remaining.
Roy is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and committed to the team back in October 2023. She swam club for Mount Lebanon Aquatic Club and went to Mount Lebanon High School.
She arrived in the fall and had a strong showing at the Cavalier Invite to conclude the season at the start of February. There she swam to a lifetime best 1:54.69 in the 200 back and also swam season bests in the 50 free (22.62) and 100 back (52.92).
Roy did not swim at ACCs or NCAAs. It took a 51.54 100 back and a 1:53.72 for non-automatic qualifiers to make the NCAA cutline. Her 200 back time from the Cavalier Invite would have made the 2026 ACC ‘B’ final, and it took a 22.56 50 free and a 52.61 100 back to score at 2026 ACCs.
Roy’s Best Times Are:
| High School | Freshman Year | |
| 50 Free | 22.57 | 22.62 |
| 100 Back | 52.53 | 52.92 |
| 200 Back | 1:56.43 | 1:54.69 |
The NCAA transfer portal closed last Friday for women and closes this Friday for men. Roy entered before the portal closed. Some exceptions are granted such as graduate transfers, head coaching changes, and if a program is cut.
The Virginia women have two announced transfers so far for the fall with Berit Berglund coming from Texas and Teagan O’Dell from Cal. Both were 2026 NCAA qualifiers with O’Dell being an NCAA ‘A’ finalist.

The Lady Vols are open to taking any scraps which fall from the table of UVA women’s team!
It’s extremely disrespectful to refer to a girl who has most likely been told some of the worst news of her life, that she got cut from her dream team, as a “scrap”
entering the portal does not always mean a swimmer was cut.
she may just be considering another school may be a better fit
Technically true, but she was cut.
Raya Mellott too
Pitt is calling
This is a fake article. UVA Fan told me DeSorbo doesn’t cut people.
But he cut the entire dive team 💀
There’s two other in the portal from UVA as well.
They were already slated to have 32 on the roster next year before the O’Dell & Berglund transfers so I was curious as to how they were making that work
DSA
Counted 8 not coming back due to graduation, transfer, retirements so far. How many do they have coming in?
Berglund and O’Dell + Pavalic, Hine, Thompson, Plytnykaite, Crijzak, Martin, Workman, Rottink, and Sagle.
Berglund puzzles me? PBs date back to freshman year
UVA is loaded with backstrokers!
plus Sagle and Thompson coming in!
seems Berglund would be a better fit for a team who needs
a backstroker for 1 year for relays
Patience, young grasshopper. Berit is just a stepping stone for Shackell. Todd is making room on the roster for bigger news. Stay tuned.
Looking to the portal to get a great swimmer is one thing. But dumping swimmers you’ve made a commitment to gets old fast. This isn’t men’s basketball. A coach that will force transfers to make room for one swimmer, will dump another one equally as quickly for another 10 NC points.
UVA didn’t get a single 27 woman. By design? maybe. But I sure wouldn’t go there thinking I’d be respected or valued. Not the way he’s been handling the portal. Team culture is a goner if 50% of the team changes annually. Or maybe that’s his goal. These are kids betting their lives and their futures on a path to a college education, not just a ring. They… Read more »
Have this same energy for Bowman who is doing this but worse?
House settlement-imposed roster limits are to blame here. No one was getting cut until last summer.
And I don’t think it’s affecting team culture as much as people think it is. From what can be seen regarding UVA women and Texas men
Who are they
Sienna Karp retired a few weeks ago with one year of eligibility left.
Does that mean she will lose any financial aid related to athletics that she was on?
From UVA yes but with those times, she’ll get a decent offer from another school.
I guessed this answers my roster question with the new transfers
