Van Mathias on American Record, Just Missing 57 Barrier: “I wouldn’t ask for it any other way”

2026 Pro Swim Series – Indianapolis

Video captured by Anya Pelshaw.

Van Mathias had a heck of a weekend, breaking two American records in the 50 breast (26.30) and 100 breast (58.01), becoming the #5 and #4 performer of all-time in the respective events. Tonight, Mathias also came as close as you can get to cracking the 58-second barrier, but he seemed pleased with the result, saying this will keep him motivated and hungry for more through the rest of the summer.

First off, the guy is hecka tuff, been a fan since last summer, what he’s doing is sweet, second, here’s some food for thought regarding his ceiling.

In Adam Peaty’s 56.88, he’s about 6.4 to 15, takes 19 strokes, and then 23 on the way back.

Van already has him by a mile on the start, and of course Adam’s top end is why he’s the GOAT, but Van takes 18 and then 21 strokes, 3 less in total, and on his 58.01 had a rather long finish.

58.01 to 56.88 is a VERY long way to go, however if anyone can do it it’s van, and his top end and race strategy will only continue to improve- this… Read more »

Good take. The 18/21 to 19/23 very well could be pullouts alone. Did you check what meter did each break out? APs pullouts are so incredibly average, it makes his power at tempo almost unbelievable. Van was dying on that 2nd 50, I think with more power and a proper taper he will be scary fast. He has wall work all over AP, so if he can approach APs on water stroke, who knows.

IU should pay him to train. He’s a huge asset for the brand.

but there’s also much satisfaction to be gained for holding a meaningful job in addition to swimming. Van has the best of both, a paying role contributing to his university and a university that supports him as a swimmer. he’s a well rounded guy!

Is it just me that is seeing this – but the men and women’s top 50 and 100 breaststrokers (and many of the 200) at this meet don’t use the exaggerated forehead dropping and rapid thrusting/extreme over-water arm recovery that has become popular. They have returned to older/simpler methods of smoother recovery and less head movement while still taking advantage of the leniencies in rules for head and hands. As an early 1980s breaststroker (before rule changes) I feel this is a more natural, rhythmic and (not that it matters) beautiful version of the breaststroke that was the reason I liked swimming it. I’m glad to see this style returning or at least being used more frequently. Of course –… Read more »

I would loooove to see more “older” aka post-college swimmers follow this sort of path. I’m guessing his FT job being related to swimming makes managing it all slightly easier, though still obviously a massive challenge.

We are very lucky that he qualified for Pan Pacs late at the Summer Champs, and that Pan Pacs allows swimmers to swim whichever events they want so he isn’t just locked into 50 BR. (Correct me if I’m wrong about that though)
