USA Wins Gold, Bronze on Day 2 of Junior Pan Ams

MATANZAS, Cuba – Carolina Sculti (Rye, N.Y.) won gold on in the girls’ 14-15 1-meter event to lead Team USA on day two of the  Junior Pan Am Championships on Friday. Also on Friday, Alison Gibson (Austin, Texas/College Station) won bronze on 3-meter in the 16-18 age group, bringing Team USA’s two-day medal total to six.

Sculti scored 333.45 points to win the 1-meter gold, with Canada’s Olivia Chamandy (323.15) and Tanya Boychuk (314.00) taking silver and bronze. Emily Grund (Keller, Texas) was fifth at 308.85.
“It was really exciting. I dove well for myself. I didn’t miss anything. I was consistent today, and I felt good,” Sculti said.

Gibson won her second medal of the championships after scoring 429.20 points for bronze on 3-meter a day after winning gold on 1-meter. Canada’s Molly Carlson took the 3-meter gold with 443.70 points, with fellow Canadian Caeli McKay finishing second with 432.55 points. Mya Kraeger(Orlando, Fla./College Station, Texas) was sixth at 377.60.
“This was an amazing opportunity. Molly and Caeli are amazing divers. It was a great competition. None of us were missing anything.  There was a lot of energy in the pool, and you could feel it,” Gibson said.

A day after winning bronze on 3-meter, Jordan Windle (Morrisville, N.C.) finished fourth on 1-meter in the 16-18 age group. Windle finished with 457.80 points, 3.45 behind bronze medalist Peter Thach Mai of Canada. Grayson Campbell (Vienna, Va.), the silver medalist on 3-meter, finished fifth on 1-meter with 455.35 points. Mexico’s Juan Celaya won his second gold after 515.50 points to win the 1-meter contest.

Max Fowler (Burke, Va.) made his international debut with a fourth-place finish on 3-meter in the 11-and-under age group. Fowler scored 238.85 in a contest won by Mexico’s Osmar Olvera, who finished with 302.05 points. Denny Gulia-Janovski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was 10th at 220.35.

Max Flory (Fairfax, Va.) finished sixth on platform in the 14-15 age group. He scored 338.90, with Mexico’s Abram Bermeo scoring 423.40 for gold.

Maysi Richards (Weatherford, Texas) placed 10th with 217.25 points on platform in the 12-13 girls’ age group. Mexico’s Arantxa Vasquez was first at 278.50.

The Junior Pan American Championships, which feature divers from 10 countries, continue through Sunday, October 11. Saturday’s competition features the 14-15 girls on 3-meter, the 11-and-under girls on 1-meter, the 16-18 girls on platform, the 12-13 boys on 3-meter, the 12-13 girls on 1-meter, the 11-and-under boys on platform and the 14-18 boys in synchronized 3-meter.
